I am searching for information about my grand uncle James Garland born 1857 in Rochfortbridge, County Westmeath. He is believed to have gone to Australia possibly between 1880 and 1900 and was not in touch with family afterwards. If he died en route how would I find this information or even when or on what ship he sailed? I only heard this from my Mother who was not born for 40 years after this so the information may be incorrect. As Irish people also went to Argentina could this have been the destination?
Parents James Garland and Mary Coffy
Siblings Mary, Rose, John, Edward

Kitty:
James was baptized April 16 1859 in Rochfortbridge so likely born a few days before. There was a child baptized in 1853 (no name provided) Rose 1855 Mary 1857 John 1861 Edward 1864
James and Mary were married July 29 1852 in Rochfortbridge.
There are very few records of ships leaving Ireland from that time period. Any possible records would be in his new country. A number of people left from Westmeath to emigrate to Argentina.

When I worked in Mullingar Co. Westmeath I did come across Matt. Garland and I think he lived in Ratharney, Co. Westmeath.

Thank you for the information about the baby christened in 1853. I had missed that one on the parish registers which are very faint, hence no first name. Now I have two ancesters to be traced. I had heard there was a brother of my grandfather who emigrated never to be heard of again.
The Ratharney branch is not related. Thank you for your interest.
