Hello,

My ancestor, Francis Tracy AKA Francis/ Frank/Franklin Inglesby/Englesby was killed in the US Civil War in 1862. In the US Army intake forms, he states he is born in Rolmatig, County Meath.  I've searched the townlands and parishes and cannot find Rolmatig.  I believe this is a misspelled and/or misheard location.  Would anyone have any idea what townland it could be? (US Army record below.   Note: Frank is also listed with his alias in other Army records.)

Name: Franklin Tracy Rank: Private Company: E Unit: 75th Illinois Infantry Height: 5' 10 Hair: BLACK Eyes: BLUE Complexion: LIGHT Marital Status: Married Occupation: Farmer Birth Date: Abt 1831 Birth Place: Rolmatig, Maith, Ireland War: Civil War War Years: 1861-1865 Service Entry Age: 31 Service Entry Date: 13 Aug 1862 Service Entry Place: Sublette, IL Joined By Whom: WM S FROST Period: 3 YRS Muster In Date: 2 Sep 1862 Muster In Place: Dixon, IL Remarks: DIED OF WOUNDS OCT 23, 1862 IN HOSPITAL AT PERRYVILLE KY Residence Place: Sublette, Lee CO, IL Record Source: Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls URL: http://www.ilsos.gov/isaveterans/civilMusterSearch.do?key=256179

Also, is it a practice in Ireland to have 2 different last names? If so, would one be a maternal name and the other a paternal name? (See marriage record below)

Name: Francis Inglesby Event Type: Marriage Birth Date: abt 1832 Marriage Date: 15 Aug 1853 Marriage Place: Webster, Massachusetts Marriage Age: 21 Father Name: Patrick Inglesby Mother Name: Mariah Spouse Name: Ann Brogan Spouse Marriage Age: 20 Spouse Father Name: Patrick Brogan Spouse Mother Name: Mary

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

D'Nel Grove Stucki

  • Hi, any chance you can send on the handwritten record showing "Rolmatig"?  We might then be able to decipher it. Thanks.
