Any links to the above families or history of same. My grandfather, Michael, was born in 1874 to Patrick Doyle from Carnahone and Catherine Foley from Leamnaguila. He had an older brother Denis and a sister Julia who died as a baby and a younger sibling. The family emigrated in 1877 and were sponsored as assisted emigrants to Sydney Australia by Catherine's brother John Foley. A number of other siblings were sponsored by John Foley the same year. Patrick Doyle had preceded her. His father was Denis Doyle and mother likely Julia. Catherine's parents were Michael Foley and Catherine Kissane. There seems to have been another branch of the Foley family who came from Glencar. Family names - Michael, Timothy, Patrick. They don't seem to be immediate members of my Foley family but likely part of the clan. The story goes that Patrick was unhappy with the landlord's increase in the rent and decided to leave for Australia. He may have travelled independently.
If any one can help with any information or if there is any record of where the families lived I would be happy as I plan on travelling to Ireland later in the year. Mary

The youngest sibling was Margaret baptized in Beaufort RC church on February 29 1876.
I located Michael's civil birth record and the family was living in Carhoonahone

Carhoonahone was a large townland. There were 33 households in the 1901 census including four Doyle households

Thank you for your response. I wonder if Carnahone and Carhoonahone are the same thing - the former being the modern form?
I will certainly fill in the form to the best of my ability but I'm not sure exactly when I will go - either late summer or early autumn. It would certainly be nice to visit those places - I was last in Killarney a couple of decades ago but didn't know exactly what town or where they came from.

Carnahone and Carhoonahone are the same place. Carhoonahone has been the correct spelling for a couple hundred years. The spelling was shortened at times.
See this 1828 Tithe listing for Carhoonahone. Likely the Michael Doyle was an ancestor possibly the grandfather to your Michael born in 1874.

I think you are right.
I followed up your comments about Carhoonahone being a townland and googled it. From there I consulted Griffiths valuation 1852 and found Denis Doyle, again Knockane. I presume this is the Denis who is Patrick's father and Michael's grandfather. He had quite a substantial bit of land and Michael has disappeared from the list.
Grandfather's older brother was Denis. Denis who is on this tithe list with Michael (Denis being incorrectly transcribed as David) could, I guess be Denis who is Patrick's father, or even, grandfather??? I wonder if Michael was his father, brother? it is interesting to read the descriptions of some of the other land as they match up with the historic map for 1852 (marshy bog etc). Further down there is an entry for a Michael (?) Kissane that I think has been wrongly transcribed as Kessane. There are Kissanes in the Foley family tree but I guess not related to these.
