Hello. Looking for info on Flaherty or O’Flaherty of Stradbally. They were miners. Married Veale. Some came to America. Patrick Flaherty, born 1810, married Honor Veale. Had many children. Some stayed & some left. Any info or descendants?

Hello Eugenie,
There are no descendants in Stradbally with the Flaherty surname, but no doubt there are some local people who are related. The only family of Flahertys to live in the parish in recent years that I'm aware of (my own) are no relation.
There is one Flaherty grave in Stradbally with an inscribed headstone that I'm aware of, in the SE corner of the old / CofI graveyard. The headstone is inscribed thus:
IHS / Erected by James Flaherty in memory / of his Wife Margaret Flaherty who depd. / this life Jany. 28th 1818 aged 57 Yrs also / his Father died Augt. 9th 1812 aged 79 Yrs
Best of luck with your research.

Thank you so much! My ancestors were miners, & came to America around 1870, when the mines closed. However, I wonder why there were so few Flahertys in Stradbally. They must have gone there from somewhere else. Possibly the Beara Peninsula in Cork, where there were mines? I can't find any traces of them anywhere. Also, I cannot find any record of my gr-grandmother, Margaret Flaherty, born 1855-6. Thanks again! Eugenie

Hello. There was a Kelley/ Kelly family in Stradbally. Patrick Kelley, born about 1834, married Hanora Flaherty, born about 1837, in Stradbally. He was a miner at Bunmahon & Knockmahon. They had many children. They came to America in 1870.
The mother of Hanora was Honor Veale, born 1816 in Stradbally. Honor Veale married Patrick Flaherty. Honor's mother was a Downey. Looking for any records of these mining ancestors. Thanks! Deenie SardoEugenie Sardo

Hello Deenie,
Thank you for your message.
That family does ring a bell. If you would like to drop me an email - cianflaherty96@gmail.com - I could see if it matches up with the one I'm thinking of.
Best wishes,
Cian

We have an Ann Downey in our family tree who had a daughter Honor Veale. The spelling of our family name was changed to Vaile once in America. I don't know of any Flaherty's or miners in our family tree.

Wow! Thank you! I will look it up! Honor Veale's mother was a Downey! In America, do you know where they settled? That would help! I know that here, I've seen Vaile, Vail, Vale, Veal, & Veale! Thanks!
