I'm wanting to explore a family story of a French connection in the TRAVERS family and the information I have to date is summarised below. I would love to find the name and any details for the Irish woman that the French man Nicolas married.

Nicholas TRAVERS ( or French version could be Nicolas?? Traverse ) was a French  trader “who married Irish gal (who  = ??) from Little Hills, County Kilkenny, in parish of Conihy, near Castlecomer and took her back to France  ( most likely living in Normandy)  Later  it is said ?? he was conscripted for Napoleon and died somewhere in Europe

Their son = Edouard was born in France.  After father Nicolas died, the Irish mother returned with French son Eduoard to Ireland.

Back in Ireland, this grandson Edouard /also called Ned also married an Irish gal ( = ? ) from same district   ... Who was she??

They had son also called Nicholas ( # 2 ) who married Anastasia Carroll approx. 1833 near Castlecomer, Ireland and lived in Moyne

They had 9 children.  Four sons went to Australia ( Edward/Ned, Joe, John and Denis )  Thomas went to USA,  5 grandchildren also later migrated to Australia

Migration to Australia

Edward or NED Travers ( 1836 -1922 ) came on “Storm Cloud” in 1857/58  and married Ellen Doran (they were family neighbours in Ireland)

They had 9 children including Thomas Travers , who had land @Rice Creek,nr Mintaroo, Bullyacre

Thomas Travers (1861 -1922 ) married Margaret Kinnane  in 1887 at Pekina Catholic Church in SA.

Had 10 kids including Kathleen Travers ( = my grandmother ) who married James McKeough ( grandfather)1901 – at St Virgils, Yatina SA

Thomas and Kathleen had 4 children = Maureen, Lorraine, Vivienne, sisters of Edmund James McKeough (= my father) who married Patricia Watson (my mother)

Edmund and Pat McKeough had 4 girls =    Noelle, (= me !)  Margaret, Leonie and Kathryn ( my siblings)

According to the subscription site Roots Ireland, the marriage of Nicholas Traverse and Anastasia Carroll was on January 5 1834 in Conahy RC church.

Conahy marriage records start in June 1832  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0982

Roots Ireland did not have a marriage record for an Edward or Ned Travers anywhere in Co. Kilkenny before 1834. It is possible the marriage occurred in Conahy prior to June 1832 and no record will be available.

I dug a little further on Roots Ireland and located a baptismal record for a John Traver baptized January 2 1837 father Edward and mother Catherine Grant. The footnotes note that the father was known as Ned and the mother Kate.

Lisdowney RC parish is to the northeast of Conahy so this may be your Ned.

  • Thank you so much Roger for your research on my behalf ..... it is much appreciated!

I may need to investigate records in France also but it is difficult without having the names involved.
