I am trying to find out exactly where my gt gt grandmother was born, together with the names of any of her siblings.

Ellen Ryan married on the 9th May 1848 to James Grant in the Parish Church, Clonmel, Tipperary. The marriage certificate states she was a minor and her occupation was a Servant and her residence was Clonmel, presumably where she was working. Her fathers name was Thomas Ryan, his occupation being a Gardener.

At the time of marriage James Grant was a Sergeant of the 47th Foot and they probably met whilst he was stationed there. Their first born, Thomas James Grant was baptised in Galbally in March 1849. Their daughter Sarah Jane was also born in Ireland in 1851 before they travelled with the Army to Corfe.

It is difficult to try and determine her exact age as according to the 1861 Census she would have been born circa 1830 and her death certificate would mean she was born circa 1829.

I would be extremely grateful for any information.

  • Mary:

I can give you a couple leads from the subscription site Roots Ireland but as you know, Ellen Ryan would have been a very common name in Co. Tipperary.

Ellen Ryan baptized August 14 1828 St. Mary's Clonmel parents Thomas Ryan and Joanne Connors

Ellen Ryan baptized November 3 1828 St. Mary's Clonmel parents Thomas Ryan and Margaret Morrissey

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Thank you for the leads.

Yes, I have and it has come back as a match to Ellen, hence my enquiring.  I have a definite DNA match to a surname connected to Ryan by the name of Foley, a distant cousin, but at this moment in time trying to find the common ancestor.
