I am looking for information regarding my great great grandmother Ellen (Helena)Preston.  I know that she was born about 1832 in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland.  Her father's name was Jeremiah Preston.  She worked in the Clonmel Workhouse and came to Australia in 1849 on the New Liverpool ship.  She came as an assisted Irish Famine Orphan.  Ellen commenced work for Richard Hull in Richmond, Australia as a housemaid.  In 1852 she married my great great grandfather Robert William Jones.  I would love to know more about Ellen and find out her parents names and what happened to them.  I would appreciate any information you may have.  Kind Regards, Carolyn

  • previous topic on Ellen for reference : Ellen Preston (Ireland)

Due to her age and the reference to her being an Orphan I suspect that Ellen was probably an inmate in the Workhouse rather than employee there, so likely she originated somewhere within the area covered by Clonmel Poor Law Union, this area would include a number of Catholic parishes - St. Mary's Clonmel (Co. Tipperary), SS. Peter and Paul (Co. Waterford) , Powerstown, Irishtown etc. not all of these parishes has records back to the early 1830s...

The annual reports for the Poor Law Unions lists about 16 orphans sent from Clonmel Poor Law Union to Australia during 1849 - but does not mention names.

A search of the Catholic Baptism Records for Tipperary & Waterford shows a number of Preston/Presten baptisms going back to the early 1800s, but no sign that I see of any named Ellen or similar. A check of the father's names shows a number of James & Johns and a couple of Josephs but no Jeremiahs unfortunately...
