I am seeking information about my maternal grandmother Eileen/Eily/Ellen Gorman/O'Gorman.

All we know is that she married my grandfather Patrick Daly in 1941 in Cahir. She listed her father's name as Maurice Gorman and her prior address as Friar St, Thurles. Her and my grandfather had 5 children but Eileen died from breast cancer in 1962. She never mentioned any of her family members, nor do my mum or her brother's and sister's recall meeting any of Eileen's family. We do not know her birth date, where she was born or her mother's name.

I have searched through all available online records extensively over the years and cannot find any Eileen Gorman with a father Maurice Gorman.

Sadly one of my aunts passed away last September and in a few weeks myself, my mum and my uncle will fly from Australia to join with my uncle in Cahir in laying my aunt to rest in Shanrahan with my grandparents.

I have had my mum and one of my uncles do their DNA with Ancestry and am trying to work through the matches to see if they lead anywhere. So far just more dead ends.

Eileen has always been a complete mystery that we have all tried to solve over the years. It would mean the absolute world to us if I could find out about her beginnings.

Thanks so much for reading this very long post. Any ideas would be gratefully received

  • Hannah,

I am originally from Caher and if you wish I can go down to meet you and your uncle there. Your uncle may now know the town better than myself but I think  I have a good knowledge of the history of the town.

On irishgenealogy  free site there is a birth recorded for Ellen Gorman at Clogheen on 9th October 1912 and the mother is listed as Catherine Gorman, the marriage to Patrick Daly is shown in Cahir in 1941 and the possible death record is listed as Eileen (Tipperary)on 4th May 1962.

You might review the above and I will try and follow up any subsequent queries

  • Hi,
Sadly the image record of Eily and Patrick's marriage is not on line, most are.
    Name Patrick Daly
    Name Eily Gorman
Date of Event      09 February 1941       Group Registration ID1409422SR      District/Reg AreaClogheen

You would have to get a copy of this then we would know Patrick's fathers name.
If you use this site ................... paste the link into search and you will see the marriage, as you click in to the next screen you can apply for a copy, you just need the basic copy.

When you have this then look in the 1901 and 1911 Census records for Patrick with the approx age. (it gives + and - 5years)
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
With this information you can go further back, there are other sites to search.

I just looked for Eileen's death, and the image isn't available, others are, what a pain!
There are 4 Maurice Gorman's listed so we need to get the correct one.
