Edward Williamson and Anne Young  were married in 1860 in Belfast.  Edward was Royal Navy.   Have some of Anne's family but have little on Edward.  He may have been born in Liverpool about 1833.  Any info would  appreciated.   Nancy Williamson O'Donnell

  • Edward & Anne’s marriage was registered in Londonderry (not Belfast) on 23.10.1860. That should give you both their fathers names and occupations. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

I can see 2 children to the marriage (there may have been others pre 1864 when statutory birth registration began): Richard Edward Williamson born 17.12.1864 at Edenmore, Londonderry. Father was Paymaster in Chief, Royal Navy.  William Alexander Finniston Williamson was born 15.5.1867 at Pennyburn.  BY then his father was Retired Naval Officer.

    From the PRONI wills site:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Edward Augustus Williamson late of Pennyburn House Londonderry County Londonderry Paymaster R.N. deceased who died 10 February 1871 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Anne Williamson of Pennyburn House aforesaid the Widow of said deceased.

There may have been an obituary for him, perhaps in the Belfast Newsletter or the Londonderry Sentinel. They are available on-line on some of the pay to view sites.

Edward should have a file at the National Archives in Kew, London, detailing his career. That may tell you more about him. Also if he was in England in the 1841 or 1851 censuses, that should tell you where he was born.

  • For births prior to 1864 you would need to search church baptism records. If the family were Church of Ireland, I would try St Columb’s in Londonderry. Their baptism records don’t appear to be on-line but there is a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.
