Greetings from the States.

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather Edward Gilligan (1857-1911).  My aunt said he was born in Kilkelly, Mayo, Ireland and his fathers name was Patrick (she did not know his mothers name).  Edward emigrated to Philadelphia around 1880, but his parents remained in Ireland.

My aunt told me Edward did have siblings but knew of no specific names. She also said he used the nickname Ned.  My mother and my aunt visited Kilkelly in the early 1980s and found some distant Gilligan relatives, but my mother passed shortly after that trip and I have no details on who/where she met these Gilligan relatives.

I have been unable to find birth or baptismal specifics for Edward in any records for Kilkelly/Kilmovee, so any help you can provide is appreciated.  My Gilligan’s are a hard bunch to find :-)

Thank you,

Noirin

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I saw your Ancestry tree and it is unfortunate that Edward's death record does not show his parents names.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and was unable to find an Edward Gilligan baptismal record with a father Patrick anywhere in Mayo. I also searched for any Gilligan baptismal record with father Patrick in Kilmovee but no records came up.

You mention Kilkelly which is covered by Kilmovee RC parish. The baptismal records for that parish do not begin until June 1854. It is possible that Edward made himself younger when he went to America. If he was born pre-June 1854 then a baptismal record would not be available.

We don't know if Patrick Gilligan was leasing land in 1855 when the Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted but there was no Patrick Gilligan in Kilmovee parish. There was a Patrick Gilligan in Ballina, another in Crossboyne parish and a third in the town of Claremorris.

No Gilligans in Kilmovee parish in the 1901 census.
