I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located eight possible baptismal records as follows which includes four of the records you mentioned: Margaret 1809 Mary 1811 Brigid 1813 Thomas 1816 Edmund 1818 John 1821 Elizabeth 1826 Martin 1832 The first six showed Powerstown and the last two Cahir. NOTE Roots Ireland transcribed the 1821 baptism as John but looking at the register I have to agree with you that its is Joanne or Johanna.

Since the Powerstown baptismal records start in September 1808, the records for the older children are not available.

The only Edmund Crotty baptismal record I could find was May 25 1785 in Clogheen RC parish, a number of parishes to the west of Powerstown.

Where they lived was likely in South Tipperary but I have not seen any reocrds including the Tithe listings that point to a townland.

  • Hi, I see the birth of Elizabeth Crotty in 1825 6th December.
A Timothy Crotty was one of the sponsors and the other was Ellen looks like Lacey.
Waterford and Lismore is the Diocese.
Then Cahir is the nearet town.
In the Tithe records Edmund Crotty is in a townland called Burncourt. This is south and west of Cahir
    Burncourt Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)
Powerstown is east of Cahir, nearer to the Waterford border.
    pwerstown tipperary - Bing

Timothy lived in Clonpet which is north east of Cahir

In Griffiths Valuation Edmund is listed as Edward. which is usual!

  • This is wonderful. This is my first direct contact for tracing this branch of my family. I am now encouraged to continue my research. For anyone else looking for these people they settled in Michigan in the mid 1830's in Oakland County. They built a small chapel and had a cemetery next to that that is still standing although only used once a year. The Chapel and cemetery are now part of St Patrick's in White Lake Township, Oakland County, MI.

AGAIN THANKS for this special gift.

  • Dear Maureen,

Glad to find a relative! I am a decendent of James Crotty, the "lucky one" who got to go back to Ireland c. 1837 to marry and then return with wives for a few of the other guys in Michigan. I am now 60 and remember as a preschooler attending gatherings at old St. Pat's in Whitelake and playing among the tombstones.  We have remained close to the Doherty's and many of the James Crotty descendents generation after generation.

In summer of 1996 one of my brothers and two of my sisters and I went to New Inn and found the marriage record of James and Catherine Gorman.  We found nothing else in the records and have no oral history of where James or Catherine were born (but I believe James' grandfather was Timothy).  We did find the decrepit old two-storey "fancy" house south of town where Nicholas Doherty's family lived (he came to Michigan with James Crotty in 1834, arriving in NYC on May 3rd and heading promptly for Michigan).  The house was being used as a storage shed by a local farmer.  He told us he had plowed the remains of the old Crotty cottage under a few years earlier to improve his pasture land.  He said no Crottys remained in the area and thought they had come from further south down toward Waterford (or maybe the Waterford diocese) .  The trail stopped there for us.

Would be interested in seeing what you may have learned about the earlier history of the Crottys and what has become of your branch.

    God bless,

    Fr. Timothy
