I have been looking for my g-g-g-grandfather, James O. Sarsfield, of Co. Waterford, born abt 1816.  He emigrated to Canada with his family (wife Jane Holmes and children Robert, John, Mary and Margaret) around 1846-1847.  In my search, I recently stumbled across an advertisement that he posted in the Boston Pilot, Aug. 12, 1854, looking for his cousin, Edmond Brown.

Edmond was from Boate(?), and emigrated from Waterford to Montreal, Canada around 1826.  The article states that he has 6 children (Patrick, Austin, John, Michael, Mary and Bridget).  It also states that they were last known to be in Montreal in 1850.  There is no mention of a wife in the article.  And, I can find no information on a community called "Boate" in any online searches.

I am looking for any information on Edmond Brown, and if possible, the relationship between the Brown and Sarsfield families.  Any assistance would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Wanda Heming

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there are many baptismal records in Co. Waterford where the father is Edward/Edmond/Edmund Brown. I did not find any Austin Brown records and there were no Brown baptismal records in Stradbally RC parish where we found the Sarsfield family. Also not having the wife's name is a constraint.

I also did not locate a Boate.

    Roger,

As always, thanks for the prompt response.  I too, have been looking in Rootsireland.com, and I did find a baptismal record for Edmund Brown, dated Oct. 25, 1797, from Parish Trinity Without.  His parents were John Brown and Margaret Maher. (I found this interesting, as James Sarsfield listed his middle name as "O'Meagher".)  Plus, the date of baptism would certainly permit him to be of the right age to emigrate at or around 1826 with 6 children.  He would have been around 30 yrs old.

Of, course the dates that I have are all estimates based on the article I have.  I will attach the advertisment that I found.  It is taken from “The Search For Missing Friends: Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed In The Boston Pilot, Vol. III”.  The article was published in the paper on Aug. 12, 1854.

I also thought that I might search in Co. Tipperary for the Brown and Meagher/Maher families, as well, since two of James' daughters were born in Ballylooby.

Once again, I appreciate what you do, and most certainly all of your assistance!

  • Dear Roger,

I have been searching for the elusive cousin Edmond Brown without much success.  The one clue that was difficult for me to move past was the reference to him being from "Boate" (refer to the attached file above).  After extensive searching, I have found no location in Co. Waterford called Boate.  However, I did find multiple references in Griffith's Valuations to a Boate family in the Abbeyside and Dungarvan areas.  This led me to research the Boate family.  Although the information online is limited, I did find that they were a quite notable family in Co. Waterford.  George Boate (of Duckspool) was married to a Jane Ussher.  This led me to the genealogical study "The Ussher Memoirs" (William Ball Wright, 1889 page 205).  One of the Ussher descendants, Rev. Arthur Ussher and wife Catherine Keily had a daughter Hannah Ussher who married Thomas Brown of Cappoquin.  The Browns then lived in Ballintaylor.

That's where my new dead end came.  I cannot find any further record of the Brown family of Ballintaylor.  These are all the direct descendants of Lt. Col. Beverly Ussher (1649-1683, of Kilmeadon and Ballintaylor, Co. Waterford). Do you know of any records related to this family, and of whether my g-g-g-grandfather's cousin Edmond came from this family line?  As my g-g-g-grandfather stated, Edmond was from "Boate"; I wonder what that infers?

    As always, thank you,

    Wanda
