I'm taking a look at a missing relatives newspaper article. Thomas Harlen (Harlin) is looking for his brother, John Harlin, who was a native of Duligate, Drogheda, Co. Meath. Any idea where Duligate was located? John was probably born between 1820-1840. I'm trying to figure out what parish this family belonged to. Thank you.

  • Hi,

There is an area of Drogheda known as Duleek Gate. I'm wondering if "Duligate" is how Thomas pronounced it.

You can see the location here:

  • The family I identified above might not be the right family. Do you have the date of the newspaper article? A Thomas Harlin age 17 died of typhus fever in 1869 (birth 1852) in St Marys. Householder was James Harlin.

  • Thank you Patricia - Duleek Gate makes a lot of sense!

I'm guessing I'm limited on finding out any information on my Harlin family because their documented life in Ireland would have happened prior to the records. I'm not 100% sure that article is about my Thomas Harlin, but i think it's likely that he had a brother named Johnbased on my families naming patterns. I do know he spent 8-10 years in that area of Pennsylvania before moving to Wisconsin. Unfortunately, I do not have the date of the Reading, PA newspaper article as it was one of the first things I found 20 years ago and I knew nothing about this family line at that time. I haven't found the original source again, but I'll put it on my to-do list.

    Here is what I know:

There are two Harlin families that came over from Drogheda and eventually settled in Wisconsin. My direct line is Thomas Harlin (b. 1823/4) and I have documented two siblings, Patrick (b. 1825) and sister, Mary Harlin Moore (b. 1819), who briefly was in Wisconsin, mostly in San Francisco, CA.

The other Harlin family likely came from Drogheda and they went straight to Wisconsin - John & William Harlin. I am not sure of their date of birth.  William Harlin was married to Anna McCanoun and their son, Robert was born March 18th, 1835 in Ireland. John married Rose (maiden name unknown), and their son, John was born 1836 in Ireland. I believe they had another child James b. May 14th, 1837, but if he isn't their son, he is definitely a first cousin to Robert & John.

Mary Harlin Moore's will left money to her brothers Thomas & Patrick and then to cousins, the second family, specifically to John (b. 1836)'s children. As well as a cousin John Roarke, who I believe was living with her in San Francisco.

Based on what I know, I'd guess that Thomas & Patrick's father was named Thomas. For 3 generations, the first male son was named Thomas. My guess is their father was the younger brother of John & William, based on the years of birth. Which would make Mary (b. 1819, Thomas (b. 1823/24), Patrick (b. 1825), Robert (b. 1835), John (b, 1836) and James (b. 1836) first cousins. My family moved from Pennsylvania to the same small township that John & William owned farms in until they moved to the city which was nearby. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to document any of these Harlin's in Ireland. I know via DNA that I'm genetically linked to Robert Harlin (b.1836).

Unfortunately, I'm probably at a dead-end with this family, but I'd love to find them some way connected to where they may have been living in Drogheda. Thank you everyone for your input - gives me hope!

  • I also have a gravesite document that lists a Richard Harlin of Legavoorin (near Duleek's Gate), but I do not have any Harlin's in my family named Richard. He died in 1804 and was buried in Newtownstalaban Graveyard. This is from JStor (which is free, but you need to register).
