There is no sign that Michael McKew emigrated to USA with his wife Mary Dunne & children Michael & Julia in 1859. Are there any death records for Michael McKew in Maryborough 1840 -1859 ? The family had been part of the St Michael's Roman Catholic parish. Two daughters married there ? Bridget to a Dowling and Fanny (Frances ?) to a Dunne.

  • The parish where at least some of the children were baptised is actually Portarlington, originally the "District of Portarlington, Emo and Killinard", which had a number of chapels in the 1830s and 40s including two in the town of Portarlington, the more recent larger church dedicated to St. Michael.

Unfortunately like most Catholic parishes neither Portarlington or Maryborough (Portlaosie) kept historic records of deaths or burials, and civil registration of deaths did not commence until 1864. The graveyard adjacent to the church in Portarlington appears to be very small - may only be for clergy etc..

Do you have years of birth for Bridget and Fanny ?

There's a possible match for a marriage for Bridget McHugh in Maryborough 20th February 1860 to a John Dowling - name of the bride's father is is given as Michael - mother's name is unclear, their residence looks like Portarlington.  Maryborough/Portlaoise is located about 20km south of Portarlington.

Other siblings were Judy batized Sept16, 1828, Patrick baptized Nov 11, 1830 and Michael baptized March 16, 1830.
