Hello,
My name is Matthew Davin. My Grandfather was Martin Davin. He was born the 10th of November 1869 in Clifden, Errislannan, County Galway.
His Parents were John Davin and Celia Kilmartin. They were married on the 24th of January 1869. They were married in the Chapel of Ballyconneely in Clifden, Galway. John's fathers name was also John and Celia's fathers name was Michael.
Martin came to the United States (Boston, Massachusettes) possibly in 1889.
I am looking for any information about my Grandfather or his family.
Thank you.
Matt

Matt:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located the 1901 and 1911 census records for your Davin family. They lived in Maum townland in Ballindoon civil parish. On the 1911 census, Celia indicated that she had 10 children but only 8 were living in 1911. I also located the 1921 and 1926 death records for Celia and John on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie
Let me know what additional info you need.

Hello Roger,
Thank you very much for the reply. I did have the census info but am extremely grateful for the death notices.
I was in Maum last month and it is a very rural area. I stopped into Keanes Bar in Maum and spoke with a few wonderful people. They were not aware of any Davin's ever in the area.
I would really like to know if I have any Davin family left in Ireland. Is there a way to find out?
Best Regards,
Matt

Matt:
I think finding family if any exist would be very difficult. I looked at the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for civil marriage records hoping to find a marriage record for any Davins who lived in Maum or Errislannan and had a father John. I did not find a reocrd. I did find three records where the father was John but the family lived in Fahy townland so I presumed a different Davin family. On the 1926 death record for John, the informant was a son Patrick. I even looked for his death record post-1926 but did not find a record.

To Matthew Davin in reply to your post about your family including Matthew Davin. This is Anne Baldwin, my great grandmother was Elizabeth Davin and her brother was luke Davin, from Clifden. My cousin has researched your family and I have it, at least most of it. I will send it to you if you give me your contact information. My email is annebill79@hotmail.com. I am on the Kerry site with Ireland XO community under Loughlin and O Shaughnessy and I ran in to your inquiry quite by accident. Given the name and the same area, I was anxious to contact you. My cousin Bill, whose Mom was Lillian Davin comes from Boston , MA area and he says your Davin's went to Lynn, MA and perhaps left there for Pittsburgh ? So contact me if you want the info I have. On a personal note, I have found cousins in Clifden and will be visiting Ireland again soon. Anne Baldwin ( Anne Ward) great grandfather James Ward from Clifden area , possibly Kingston Glebe. Happy New Year 2020

Hi Matt,
Regarding the name "DAVIN" , Griffith's Valuations have 19 entries for the Barony of Ballynahinch which covers the civil parishes of Omey (Clifden), Ballindoon, Moyrus and Ballynakill. This valuation was taken c1853. www.askaboutireland.ie Free Site
Miriam Moffit's book - The Protestant Missions in Connemara - 1848 - 1937 (2008) has a record of the marriage in 1851 of Thomas Davin of Clifden to Mary Murray. Thomas' father was John a Weaver. In 1859 a John Needham of Ardbear married Margot Davin of Tullarachan. Margot's father was named Dominick. In the same year a John Davin of Ballyconree married Barbara Folan from Ballyconree. They are described as farmers. In 1863 a Bridget Davin of Ballyconree is recorded in a school entry. Her father is Martin and mother Mary. In 1867 a Julia Davin is also recorded with the address Russ. Father is John Davin and mother Barbara.
This Barony, as well as Moycullen Barony was the subject of hundreds of evictions. The Protestant Mission activity created divisions between families and neighbours. The Catholic church authorites were slow to build schools for primary education in rural areas and the Protestant Mission, whose base was in London took advantage of the situation in ordert to increase their numbers in Ireland.
The famine of the 1840's had left many in dire poverty.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your reply. To conclude, I recommend you to www.findmypast.ie (Subscription Site) which has a share of information on Davin families in Errislannan and Clifden, births and marriages.
In relation to Poverty Relief Loans, those were given by the British Government to enable people in poor circumstances to purchase seed or piglets in order to better their lives.
The borrowers had to be 21 years of age and required two Guarantors who were of similar age. The Clifden sheet is not very informative. The Oughterard loan sheet is better!, but irrespective, you have to repay it!
You have a John Davin of Errislannan in 1841 who took out a loan, No. 5503.
Regards,
McCoy
