My great grandfather : He lived much of his life in and died in Waterford 1897 age 75 and was an engineer/ superintendent for the new railway to Waterford to Killiney . He had 7 children and only son of same name , Daniel, was my grandfather ( joined Royal Navy)
Trying to trace any information on Daniel senior on where he was born, wife, siblings and his McDowell ancestors . Father’s name Robert known from marriage certs to 1st wife ) Susannah Curry married in Dublin but who died 1866 on board ship returning from Jamaica via New York - I believe Daniel may have been working on a railway in Jamaica as their only daughter Margaret Jane born in Kingston .
2nd wife) Grace Nelson McMinn married 1869 Drumbo Co.Down Related to Magill family. Moved to Waterford . Any help narrowing down his story gratefully received .

Fiona:
I have one possible lead. I found the marriage record to Grace McMinn which showed that Daniel was Presbyterian.
I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a March 23 1825 baptismal record for a Daniel McDowell with father Robert McDowell and mother's name not recorded. The church was the Mountnorris Presbyterian Church in Co. Armagh. The family lived in Tullyallen.
This Daniel had a sister Anne Eliza baptized July 23 1817. brother Robert baptized December 11 1821, sister Agnes baptized April 23 1827 NOTE: mother's name was shown as Mary McKeon, brother Alexander McKean McDowell born February 18 1836 and baptized May 17 1836. Mother's name shown as Mary McKean.
I did not locate a marriage record for Robert McDowell and Mary McKean.
Let me know if you have any questions.
