Hello Everyone,

I have an ancestor , Mary Dwyer  ( born 1835) who married a Richard Dalton in Donaskeigh Knockavilla Tipp in  2 nd July 1854. They then had a baby boy Patrick who was baptised in  09/10/1854  in the same church.. Something happened to Richard as Mary came out to Australia ibeleieve under her maiden name of Dwyer in BOUT 1857, LEAVING  little Patrick 3 yrs back in Ireland with Grandmother and Aunts in Dwyer family ( same village). Later in  1862 , they all came out to Australia in the ship THERESA.  Mary Dwyer re married and her marriage certificate has her as Dwyer  spinster not DALTON.  She became Mary Gee marrying James Gee in 1858 in Brisbane.Does anyone know what happended to Richard Dalton in this marriage. Family anecdotes have him as a policeman or resistance group?  Thank you. Di Fitzgerald

  • Dear Di:

Many thanks for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

There are a number of local volunteers who may be able to assist if there is a story as to Richard Dalton's death and I will alert them to your post.

In the meantime, you may be aware that the Knockavilla parish registers are online through the National Library of Ireland website and the link is below:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0273

In addition, newspaper research may be very helpful to your research for further information.  You might try the website Irish News Archives and the British Newspaper Archives.  Both are subscription sites but have a number of old and local Irish papers digitised.  These can be searched for family references.  In addition, if you have a FindMyPast subscription, the British Newspaper Archives are available through their site.

If you have further information, or have any questions, please let me know.

The best of luck with your research!

    Kind regards,

    Jane

Hello Jane and others,  I am looking forward to finding the church where my Dalton /Dwyer relatives were married and my great , great , grandfather was baptised.  I have not paid for access to a Newspaper record and so i still do not have any clue what happened to Richard Dalton not long after his marriage  and birth of his son Patrick in 1854. Mary  Dwyer reverts to her maiden name and comes out to Australia, leaving her little boy Patrick behind, ( He came out later) . I think Richard Dalton is born in 1830  to Michael and Mary Dalton. I would like to see the GRIFFITH Valuations blocks of land  identified as that of Richard Dalton or Dwyers. Any clues on the Knockavilla /Donaskeigh Catholic Church.  When Mary Dwyer re marries in Australia in 1858 she lists herself as spinster which I believe is untrue. Still wondering what happened to Richard Dalton. If Richard was a policeman as family rumour has it...an RIC ''event " is listed for 1860. I may get to National Archives in London next month to see what the "event " was .

Thank you for reading...all quidance welcome. Di Fitzgerald
