Hi, I am hoping that you will be able to assist me. I am researching the Cusick Family who emigrated to New South Wales in 1863.

Thomas Cusick b abt 1831 Clare - dec 1886 Singleton NSW - his parents were James Cusick and Joanne Mc Inerney.

Thomas married Catherine O'Donnell 1859 Tulla Clare

Catherine O'Donnell b abt1831 - dec 1905 Singleton NSW her parents were Patrick O'Donnell and Mary Carroll.

Children who emigrated with them were Patrick Thomas 1861 and Mary Anne Cusick b1863. Mary Ann is recorded by a great uncle of mine as being from Poulnagoona Clare. Are you able to assist with any of this information. I am not sure if they migrated together or separately

I am travelling in May to Ireland for family research and would love to find answers. my questions may be too vague for you to assist but I live in hope.

thanks

  • Margaret,

The Clare Library (fee site) clarelibrary.ie is a good source for Clare records. I found Thomas Cusack born 04.10.1829 to James Cusack & Joan McInerney. There was also a Catherine Cusack born 07.01.1820 to the same parents. The sponsors for Thomas were John McInerney & Kate Ryan, and for Catherine they were Pat McNamare & Catherine Toohy. The residence for both births was Glandree. I also found the marriage record for Thomas & Catherine O'Donnell on 05.11.1856 in Glandree. Witnesses were Miles McGrath and Catherine Hurly.

I could not locate Catherine's birth record nor the records of their two children. Are you sure that Patrick and Mary Anne were born in Tulla, Clare? The library records are pretty comprehensive.

    Regards,

  • Hi Carolyn,

May I say that you are an angel for helping me. That is fantastic information. I will visit the library when I go. Regarding Mary Anne, documents death certs, marriage etc for her state multiple options, 'Clare', 'Limerick', a great uncle of mine who wrote his life story said she was from 'Poulnagoona Co Clare' - I have no idea if this is correct, however he was close to his grandmother Mary Anne. I made an assumption that they would have been in the location of their parents.

Are there additional records that I could research that would help me understand their life in Glandree? Such as types of workers, lifestyle/ politics of the area, impact of the great famine.

Would there be cemetery locations that I could see where their family has been laid to rest etc.

    thank you so much

    Margaret

  • Margaret,

There are other Clare resources on the clarelibrary.ie site, so I think that is a good place to look for your further questions. There is a townland called Poulnagun in the Killilagh Civil Parish in Clare. You could look at Griffith's Valuation records or Tithe Applotment records for your ancestors. The townland of Glendree (Glandree) is in the Tulla Civil Parish. Death records began in 1871, and those can be found on irishgenealogy.ie under the civil records tab.
