This is a bit confusing as there are 2 records for Danile on rootsireland.ie/: Perhaps the first one died and they named the second Patrick also (which did happen) but I couldn't find a burial record

Thank you so much for this information. Daniel Crowe, my 2x Great Grandfather emigrated to New York and died in Troy NY in 1877 which would explain the lack of death records in Emly. My Aunt Loretta Nial had not been able to trace his family in Ireland. I thought I had identified his father as Jeremiah "Darby" Crowe, but the dates did not add up. Daniel's gravestone records his age at death as 74, which would have his birth as 1803. 1800 is probable as ages at emigration are often not exact. Based on your information, I am now thinking that his father would be Patrick Crowe. Daniel had 8 children, 3 sons, Joseph, Patrick, and Jeremiah. From somewhere I have Catherine born in Raheen Upper, Solloghodberg Parish, Tipperary, perahps they married there. I know there is a marriage record for a Daniel Crowe and Annie Higgins, but the date doesn't work with the births of his children as there are baptism records for at least three where Catherine is recorded as the mother and Daniel the father. Thank you for these new pieces of information and a new direction for my research. Kathy

Christina, Thanks for the tip. My siblings and I visited Emly in 2015 and spent some time in the graveyard. The only Crowe marker we found was actually erected by a Patrick Crowe who emigrated to Australia in honor of his father Patrick Crowe. With the information from Col, I will go back to my photos to see if there might be a closer connection to my 2x GreatGrandfather Daniel Crowe. Kathy

Kathy, I have Crowe ancestors in both Emly & Solloghodmore. I believe they lived and married in both areas so we are probably related somewhere along the line (I have taken a DNA test so can prove it if you have.) There are both Civil and Catholic parishes in Ireland (something to do with Ireland's political history!) Raheen Upper townland (where your Catherine lived/married) is on the border of Solloghodmore Civil Parish, but Sologhead Catholic Parish is much larger and includes places in the Civil Parishes of Solloghodmore, Solloghodbeg, Oola and Tuoghcluggin. Raheen Upper townland is in Solloghodbeg ('more' means big, 'beg' means small.) If your Catherine appears in the Sologhead Catholic Registers it makes sense that she was in the Catholic Parish of Sologhead. It would be interesing to know who she married, and if they had children. Also if any other of your Crowes ended up in Sologhead Catholic parish :) Kind regards Richard

Richard, Thank you for your note and information. I took the Ancestry DNA test years ago and am still registered there. I have also been building our family tree on that site (as well as others). Your information about the Solloghodmore Civil Parish and the Sologhead Catholic Parish is very interesting and I will make use of it in further research. Daniel Crowe and Catherine Humphries had eight children, seven born in Ireland. All seven appear to have emigrated with their parents, although I have not been able to find passenger information, so I am not sure of dates. I also suspect that Daniel emigrated first, as the older seven children were all born between 1835 and 1846. The youngest, Hanora, was born in 1855 in Saratoga County New York State, USA. Catherine died shortly after her birth. This would put Catherine's arrival no later than 1854, but Daneil could have left between 1846 and 1853. Jerimiah Darby Crowe died in 1851 which I have always suspected precipitated the emigration of Daniel and Catherine. Daniel and Catherine's oldest daughter, Bridget, married my great-grandfather Matthew Nial (Nihil) in 1862 in Troy New York. Tracing family history is a facinating and time consuming hobby for me. Warm regards, Kathy

Hi again Kathy, Bridget Crowe baptised on 13 Oct 1836 in Emly, must be Bridget who married your great-grandfather Matthew Nial (Nihil) in 1862 in Troy New York!

Hello,
There is an entry under Croke - Crough and Croagh are legit variations and are common in this part of Tipperary and were carried to the new world but died out in Ireland by the 1901 census and standardised names.
Croagh is coorrupted to Croak and Croke by pronounciation - Tipp used to have a strong accent to the point where other Irish could not understand it! :)
