Cornelius Black is my 2 X Great Grandfather. According to the Irish Catholic Registers, he was buried on March 15, 1850. His burial place is Drumlumman, South Cavan in the Diocese of Ardagh. Would anyone know the name of the cemetery where he was laid to rest? Having that would allow me to search for his other family members who might be buried there.

Thanks for your kind help with this. Happy holidays to all.

With gratitude,

Jerry Moe

  • In the early 19th Century the Catholic parish of Drumlummon South (aka Drumlumman South & Ballymachugh) had two chapels, one of which was at Carrick townland in Drumlummon civil parish. Old maps show a graveyard next to the church which is still visible to this day - I think probably where your Cornelius was buried.

The other chapel for the parish at Ballynarry in Ballymachugh civil parish also has a current graveyard, on the old maps this one appears quite small.

Not everyone had headstone back then, and not all markers survive, so there may not be any indication of exactly where his burial was. Possible some other later family had headstones that might be visible..

  • It's listed as Carrick, Finnea, Co. Cavan and currently dedicated to St. Mary, it's sometimes listed under County Westmeath as that's where the nearby village of Finnea is located (formerly a town). Three county borders meet in this area - Cavan, Longford and Westmeath.

The Catholic Diocese is Ardagh and Clonmacnoise.

Just to confuse things the other Church for the parish at Ballynarry is also dedicated to St. Mary..

  • The residence of your Cornelius shown on the death/burial record looks like it might be 'Carrickakillew' which is the name of a townland in Drumlummon civil parish, it's located very close (about 1km) to the townland of Carrick where that Church and it's Graveyard are located.

See the entry for the townland on the placename database : https://www.logainm.ie/en/5630
