Hello:   Looking for information on family of John Coleman and Mary McHale.  The birth record for daughter Mary b 24 Jan 1873 lists father as a farmer in Lisaniska.   That is all I know except Mary immigrated to US.  Any information appreciated.  tyrtrim

  • Hi,

A John Coleman with an address, Lisaniska married a Mary McHale of Tonebeha in Knockmore R.C. Church, Ballina , Co. Mayo on February 28th 1870. Civil record. John's father was David Coleman, deceased - Mary's father was Anthony.

    Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie - has the following: David 1871, Mary 1873, John 1875, Ann 1876, Nancy 1877, Pat 1879.

The following sites can be accessed free: www.nli.ie - Catholic records; -  www.askaboutireland.ie - for details of land valuations 1850's.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and also the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  Not sure what information you have. John Coleman and Mary McHale married February 28 1870 according to the civil record. John was a widower. His father was David Coleman who was deceased and the father of Mary was Anthony McHale. John's fist marriage was to a Mary Holmes on February 25 1866.  Looks like Mary died in 1867 at age 30. We only have index records for deaths from 1864-1870. No children for this marriage as far as I can see.

There were at least four other children of John and Mary McHale: David 1871 John1875 Ann or Nancy 1876 and Patt in 1879..

The townland was Lissaniska West in Ballynahaglish civil parish.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation showed David Coleman living in Lissaniska West who likely was still living then.

After 1879, the trail grows cold. The family was not in Lissaniska in the 1901 census.

I saw an 1888 death record for a John Coleman in the next parish over and the informant on this record was David Coleman son of John. Not sure if this is a different family or not.

See eighth record at this link  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Do you have any addiitonal information on the family. Maybe more emigrated then just Mary.

  • Thank you to all who contributed information on this family.    All information new to me.   the daughter of John Coleman and Mary McHale named Mary b 1873 immigrated to New York City in 1913 where she worked as a nurse.   A widow at age 38, her second marriage was to my great uncle who predeceased her by some 20 years.    He is buried with his family who made provisions for Mary to be buried with them, however, her death certificate shows she was buried miles away.  No other Coleman or McHale nearby.    It is possible some of her siblings also immigrated to the US but apparetly, not to New York City.

I am happy to have the information on Mary's family.  Maybe one day to find some still living in Co Mayo.
