Hi,
I believe that my family members lived in Eyrecourt in the early 1800's. I am looking for anyone who knows anything about the Coen family who lived there. I have a few Coen's that I have found including one Thomas Coen who was a priest and a John Coen who was the headmaster of an endowed school? I am trying to establish if they are the people I am looking for to add to my family tree and to find out anything more about them.
Many thanks
Caprice

Hi Caprice,
In relation to previous post, a Thomas Coen was Bishop of Clonfert, Co. Galway in the 1820's. Memorial of Graves in the Abbey cemetery in Loughrea records him as 1766 - 1847. Credit: Alan & Mary Van Dyke 2011.
An interesting report in the Freeman's Journal newspaper dated October 15th 1827 - page 2, gives an interesting account of him attending to an Army Sergeant in Loughrea who had become seriously ill and being a member of the Anglican church had requested his own clergyman, but finding that he was away in Galway city he requested a Popish priest, as he would not be back in Loughrea before his death. The Sergeant's wife and his Commanding Officer agreed to the attendance of Bishop Coen. The Sergeant survived and reported how grateful he was for the attendance of the Bishop.

Thanks so much for this! I have emailed the history association so hopefully when everything is up and running a little bit more I might get a reply.
That's really interesting I keep finding snippets of information but can't seem to find anything concrete about them.
I appreciate your help,
Kind regards,

Caprice, I am a distant relative of yours from Galway and also very keen to figure it all out. I have details of the Coens in the late 1800s and 1900s, my great great grandfather was John Coen from Eyrecourt buried in Clonfert. Let me know if you want to connect!
