Margaret Cloonan was my grandmother. The records I have relating to her include her marriage license, her death certificate and US Census records from 1900 and 1910. I cannot trace her any further back than her father Michael.

Margaret Cloonan
Birth date: 17 January 1876 Ireland
Residing in Homestead, Pennsylvania at time of marriage
Marriage date: 1 July 1896
Marriage Place: Allegheny Pennsylvania, USA
Spouse: Charles Laird
Consent of: Anthony Cloonan, Homestead, Pennsylvania
Died: 28 January 1917
Father: Michael Cloonan
Census records show she immigrated to the US in 1890

There is no record showing where she was born, who her mother was, or if she had siblings. Also, I can find no record of any kind telling me anything about Anthony Cloonan.

There are records for two Michaels that could be the right age to be her father.

One born about 1847 (spouse Mary Walsh — daughter Margaret b: 1881)

one born about 1848 (spouse Mary Flaherty — daughter Margaret b: 1893 however there is a Michael b: 1876 [could the dates have been switched?])

I’m not sure of the County or townland but I’m starting with Galway Bohaun or Clifden.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

  • Hi Mckr,

I agree that one of the two you mentioned is probably yours

www.rootsireland.ie/ has this the only one for any county for Margaret Cloonan with father Michael 1876 + - 5 years

    Name:Margaret CloonanDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:11-Sep-1881Address:West QuarterParish/District:INISHBOFINGender:FemaleCountyCo. Galway
    Denomination:Roman Catholic

    Informant 2:Bridget Walshe

    Were they R C?

Siblings are Patrick bap 1875 Mary 1873 Michael 1879

IF her second son was named Michael & her first daughter Mary (as per the Irish naming pattern it would help the case for this being your Margaret). However not everyone followed the pattern of course!

Parents' marriage with very little info:

    Date of Marriage:11-Aug-1872
    Parish / District:INISHBOFIN
    County:Co. Galway
    Husband
    WifeName:MichaelCloonan
    MaryWalshAddress:
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Roman Catholic

This is the only Anthony Cloonan from Galway & is from the same area

    Name:Anthony CloonanDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:28-Feb-1897Address:West QuarterParish/District:INISHBOFINGender:MaleCountyCo. Galway
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:John CloonanMother:Mary ConeelyOccupation:

    Informant 2:Mary Corbett

Bear in mind there was a lot of mis-recording & ignorance about birthdates

rootsireland.ie/ has 8 Galway birth/baptisms for Michael Cloonan 1850 + - 5 years but none with parents Michael & Mary (applyng naming pattern from his children's names for his parents' names)

  • I want you to know that I appreciate your response to my query and I thank you. I have continued my research and am narrowing down my leads. Your response has been helpful. I am in Ireland now and will be visiting the Connemara area this week. Hopefully I will be able to find clues. Again, thank you for your help.    Claire
