Hi, I'm looking into my family history to find my roots. So far it has led me from my birth place on Teesside, Co. Durham, England, to Dumbarton in Scotland, where my grandfather Patrick lived before moving to Teesside, and I've traced my GG Grandftather Michael Cloherty (later Clocherty) and his father Patrick Cloherty, to Clifden in County Galway. If anyone can help in any further information I would appreciate this immensly. Thanks.

    Hi,

The Barony of Ballynahinch which includes the town of Clifden has ten Patrick Cloherty's. Source: www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith - Free Site.  Griffith's Valuation was taken up in early 1850's and published in 1855. In the parish of Omey there is "Patrick Cloherty (James)"  and "Pat Cloherty (Denis). They are tenant farmers in the townland of Knockbrack. In the townland of Emlagh (same parish) there is another "Patrick Cloherty" who is also a tenant farmer.

You did not give any years in your query. It would be helpful to know the time period. Catholic records may be of assistance. Google "Catholic records Ireland". They are from early 1800's, but are not complete.

    Regards,

  • Hi McCoy,

Thanks for your response to my family query, I'll look up the sources you have suggested to see what I can gleen from them.

Its good to know the information about the Barony Of Ballynahinch (Clifden), the parish of Omey and the townlands of Knockbrack and Emlagh, as I did not quite understand these and therefore should of great help with my future family search.

I initially posted knowing very little about my irish family history hence some of the vagueness expressed in my earlier message. From some further research I understand that my Great Grandfather, Michael Cloherty, was born in 1862, in Clifden, Co. Galway. I believe I've got his baptism record dated 8th July 1862, possibly in the parish of Omey?. His parents were entered on it as Pat Cloherty and Anne McNamara. Michael's father, Pat Cloherty, from my limited information, appears to have been born in @1832 and his mother Anne McNamara born @1835 but i have no further details as to their birth place etc, do you have any further information?.

I'm not able to determine when the Cloherty family, probably Michael and Delia (nee Egan), moved from Ireland to Scotland, is there any way of finding out this information?

Thanks for you help, Richard Wood (Woody)

    Hi Richard,

The only hope you have in getting details of when Michael moved to Scotland is from his work record and birth years of his children. BMD records in Ireland came into force on January 1st 1864, so if any children were born in Ireland they are likely to be registered. The 1901 census for Ireland has a Denis Cloherty, aged 56 in Knockbrack. Son - Stephen and daughter Bridget (20) & 21)residing with him. This probably links in to the Griffith Record in 1855 - Pat Cloherty (Denis). Patrick Cloherty is Emlagh is aged 82 years. There is a marriage recorded for Patrick Cloherty, Emlagh and Mary Conway on December 21st 1875. Witnesses: John Conneely and Sarah Lydon. In those years there were many maternal deaths, so it was not unusual for a man to have married on the death of his wife, particularly if there were young children. This has to be kept in mind when trying to sort out various families.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Regards,

  • Hi Richard, it would appear we are related. Your Mum Eileen was my Nana, Delia's sister.  If you get in touch, I can share my Tribal Pages tree with you.  Claire
