Hello. I am writing from Canada and I am endeavouring to find a marriage between Hugh Carolan/Carrolan/Carlin and Mary Cassidy. who appear to have had 5 children:
- Mary 1832 - Dublin
- Peter 1834 - Dublin
- James 1836 - Dublin
- Mark 1838, - Cavan
- Philip 1844 - Cavan
According to John Grenham's site a large number of both Carolan and Cassidy families lived in Enniskeen, Cavan; Mullagh, Cavan; and Upper Bodoney in Co. Tyrone.
The 1821 Census for Mullagh/Castlerahan Cavan turned up a Hugh Carrolan and Mary with 4 children:
- Patt 1812
- Mary 1813
- Bridget 1816
- Peter 1820
Tithe Books have also revealed 4 Hugh Carolans over a 10 year period 1824 - 1834 In Mullagh, Knockbride, Enniskeen and Killenkere.
Wish I could provide more information. Any suggestions on how I can narrow down this Carolan & Cassidy couple would be extremely helpful.
Thanks so much. Jill

Jill,
In looking at your first Carolan/Cassidy family, here is what I found on the paid site Roots Ireland:
Mary Anne Carolan 22 Jul 1832, RC parish St. Paul's Arran Quay, Parents: Hugh Carolan & Ellen Keogh
Peter Carolan 17 Jan 1834, RC parish St. Paul's Arran Quay, Parents: James Carolan & Mary Cassidy
James Carolan 1 Sep 1836, RC parish St. Paul's Arran Quay, Parents: Hugh Carolan & Mary Cassidy
Mark Carolan 11 Feb 1838, residence - Beckscourt, RC parish Killann, Cavan, Parents: Hugh Carolan & Mary Cassidy; sponsors: Bartle Cassidy & Bridget Cassidy
Philip Carolan 11 Jan 1844, RC parish Killann, Cavan, Parents: Hugh Carolan & Mary Cassidy, sponsor: Bridget Carolan
The marriage records for St. Paul's Arran quay are from 1732-1900, but I could not find their record. Either Hugh was married previously to Ellen Keogh or that is another family. Also, Peter might not be in the family you are seeking...perhaps a relation given the same parish and name of son born 1836.
Regards,
Carolyn

Hello Carolyn
Thank you SO MUCH for checking those records for me. Certainly raises some questions as I have the marriage license of Peter Carrolan and Anne Rogers married in Scotland in 1856. Hugh Carrolan and Mary Cassidy are clearly his parents. The 1861 census shows Peter and Anne as both having been born in Ireland; hence I assumed his parent, Hugh and Mary were also from Ireland.
Peter's age at marriage is stated as 22 which would/could mean a birth in 1834. That is why I was hopeful that his parents listed on the baptism would be Hugh and Mary instead of your discovery of James and Mary.
Could you advise how I would go about ascertaining whether the Mary Carolan in the 1821 census in Cavan with husband Hugh (who have a son Peter in 1820) is Mary Cassidy?
Thank you. Jill

Jill,
If I am looking at the same 1821 census record found on Family Search that you are, the Hugh & Mary Carolan family have four children - Patrick, Peter, Mary and Bridget. Peter is one in this record, so his birth is 1820 which would make him 36 years old at marriage, not 22. Are we viewing the same record? Also, this 1821 record shows the family living in the RC parish of Mullagh which is a bit south, with one county in between them, from the RC parish of Killann(e) where the birth records I mentioned above were from
Let me know,
Carolyn

Yes we are looking at the same 1821 Census entry. You mentioned Mullagh. Tithe Books have revealed 4 Hugh Carolans over a 10 year period 1824 - 1834 In Mullagh, Knockbride, Enniskeen and Killenkere.
Thank you. Jill
