Looking for the Father (unknown CARNEY) and Maternal grandparents ( John & ? McGLENN/McGLYNN) of Elizabeth Carney.  In ROSCOMMON COUNTY, possibly in or near STROKESTOWN

My great-grandmother Elizabeth Carney, born on Christmas Day, 1868-1870 (American records unclear on the year), immigrated to the U.S. as a baby or young child around 1870-72 with only her mother, Elizabeth McGlynn/McGlenn Carney, who promptly remarried to a man named James Murphy, whose surname the younger Elizabeth took.  Elizabeth told her grandchildren (who told me) that she was born in County Cork.  The family lived in Pennsylvania (Annie born 1875) and eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan (Nellie born 1880).  They were very poor and left few records.

DNA has helped, first of all, to locate my roots in County Roscommon, not Cork (although she may have been born there, as her parents made their way to Queenstown to emigrate). DNA also has established a connection to the McLuen family who was briefly in Strokestown but had roots in Scotland.  I am still working on the exact connection.  I also have a distant DNA connection to Carney and Graham/Grenham families with Roscommon roots who settled in New York City in the mid- to late 1800s

I have been to Roscommon, but only for a day, and a Strokestown researcher was very helpful, but unable to give me a definitive answer.  Unfortunately, due to other obligations, I have not fully analyzed what she gave me, as well as information I have since gathered, mostly from DNA. But I saw the invitation to write a message, and thought I would just put my information out there again (I have one previous message on the website), in case new research has come to light or someone else is connected to this family.

Thank you for your consideration.

  • Barbara:

I found a birth record for a child named Elizabeth McGlinn in the Strokestown registration district. The birth date looks like December 28 1868. There was no father listed but the mother was Elizabeth McGlinn. See third record. The birth was in the Strokestown workhouse.

  • Thank you Roger!!  This may just be the first chink in my brick wall!

She was an infant when she came over and I always knew the facts were likely to be soft. Also, there was no indication of a Mr. Carney, only the last name of the mother/daughter.  I later found out Carney was not the mother's maiden name (Glenn, McGlynn, McGlenn in various U.S. records). So I thought the father was likely Carney, married or not.  Then DNA showed Roscommon ethnicity and genetic relationship to several Carney families in New York who originated in Roscommon.

I will look at the record you referenced (I think I have to join the site for the link to work properly) and then see if I can find a guy named Carney with some connection to the workhouse.

    Thank you, Thank you,

    Barbara
