Seeking parents of Philip Cahill born c 1819 native of Drumbane Tipperary who arrived on the "Glenswilly" in 1841, No parents were listed for Philip and only refernce to them that I have found are on Philip's Death Certificate listing them as Edward and Bridget. Philip wasaccompanied by his wife (m 1839 in Drumbane, Tipp) Judith also known as Johanna formerly Hayes mother Ellen Ryan, father not given, and their son Edward aged 4 months who was born in Devonshire prior to thee ship sailing for New South Wales. Philip and Johanna's ages were given as 21 yrs. Ellen Ryan was listed as living in Drumbane.
Interestingly, William Hayes aged 28 and his wife Ellen also aged 28 also emigrated on the "Glenswilly" along with many other Hayes and Ryans. Could this Ellen Hayes be Johanna's mother? The Immigration Official noted that "28 years very doubtful must be nearly double that age". Any information appreciated.

Hi,
you say....
and their son Edward aged 4 months who was born in Devonshire.
I have looked for this birth and can not find it.
On the Glenswilly ship record it says he was born in Tipperary.
Have you got the record in Devonshire please? This Biddy Cahill (short for Bridget) must be their sister!
CAHILL Biddy 1855 22 Drumbane Edmund / Bridget both dead 2 bros=Thomas&Phillip at Goulbou rn. Ship = Sultana
This William ........Johana's brother.
HAYES William 1841 28 Drumbane Jack H. / Mary RYAN Father a labourer {husb of Ellen,28.} Ship = Glenswilly
His wife Ellen
HAYES Ellen 1841 28 Drumbane Timothy / Ansty RYAN Father a labourer. {wife of Will iam,28}"must be nearly twice that a ge". Ship = Glenswilly

I am a descendant of Ellen Hayes nee Ryan.
When she migrated to Australia on the Glenswilly she travelled under an assumed identity - she travelled as the wife of her son. As you can see the ruse didn't go entirely unnoticed.
The passengers on this voyage were bounty migrants. It would have suited the widowed Ellen to travel with her family and it would have suited the agent to collect the bounty for assisting another migrant to Australia.V Flanagan

Thank you for confirming Ellen HAYES was indeed travelling as the wife of her son. Immigration official must have had a bit of a laugh, but looks as though he confined himself to putting a note on the journal. I was reasonably sure she had arrived this way but nice to have it confirmed, Thank You, Ros Cahill
