According to research Michael Buckley died in 1847.  His widow Elizabeth Flynn Buckley and family living in Ballynahoun left after his death for the United States.

The Tithe Applotments of the Parish of Kilcleagh dated 31st August 1825 (TAB 30/47.Film 106) has one of only two references in the record to Michael Buckley spelled Buckly.  He was found on 3 perch in a townland called "Balnahoun Brackagh".  Also living on this townland was James Flyn living on just under 5 perch.  Other neighbours were Malone, Daly, Adams, Claffey, Doolan, Stanton, Martin and Burk.  It is obvious when the Buckleys reached the States they referred to Balnahoun as Ballinahoun.  The name Brackagh appears after the townland names of Balnahoun and Castletown in 1825 Tithe Applotments.   Balnahoun and Castletown are right beside each other and at Newbridge there used to be a mill.  These "hovels" could be referring to the laborers cottages.  Balnahoun Tithes were paid to a Church of Ireland rector, Rev. Arthur Rollston.  Edwin Thomas Mathews seems to have been the landlord in 1825 though Lord Castlemain seems to have been the main landlord in the 1850's.  There were no Buckleys left in Balnhoun in the 1850's.  The only other Buckly in Kilcleagh Tithes in 1825 was a William and Lewis Buckley at Balinakill.  William was on 3 acres 3 perch and Lewis on under one acre.

It is obvious that Michael Buckley was very poor as 3 perch is a very small amount of land.  James Flyn was in a similar situation.

On Pos. 9358 Kilcleagh/Moate RC parish register we find the obit of Michael Buckley.  Take note that the name Brackagh also occurs as Braccah and Braccagh.

"Michalis Buckley de B. Bracah (burial) 27th Sept. 1847".  i.e. Michael Buckley of  Balnahoun Brackagh.

The cost of the funeral may have been L2.9.6 which is the sum that occurs after his name.

  • Dear lisofin:

Thank you for the information in your post about your Buckley ancestor.  It sounds like you have done a lot of research, and if you would consider creating an Ancestor Profile about Michael Buckley from Ballinahoun that would be great.  You can do so below:

Your note about the payment of his funeral is most likely the cost paid to the priest to officiate at his burial.

Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Am planning on being in Ireland in July.  Is there anyone who knows the history of the Ballinahoun area in the 1840's?
