Working on a process of elimination with Daniel Kelly.  What are confirmed facts regarding 'Daniel Kelly' is he married at Hotspur, Victoria, Australia early November 1849 to a Mary Bastable.   Unfortunately the attending priest wasn't the most reliable book-keeper in regard to recording BDM.    According to the record made by him neither Mary or Daniel were lierate.   I have found elsewhere that both were indeed lterate.   There was a son, William Keilly / Kelly recorded at the Portland Church  in August (16?) 1851.  Parents given as Daniel and Mary.   After this record Daniel Kelly seems to disappear with no further births or anything else being recording with his name included.   Mary set up house with her partner (Abraham Firth) for the rest of her life during the mid 1850's with her dieing 1914.

I haven't had any success in finding any records for either Daniel or his brother Thomas after they arrived into Melbourne (other than the above)  the brothers were listed as bounty passengers on the England.

It is possible they returned to Ireland - which I doubt given the economic climate at that time or possible moved on to America or even travelled north through New South Wales or into Queensland.  I'm  open to suggestions.

  • Abygail,

You have put on the board for Ballynascreen parish, so I assume you have some information linking the two Kelly brothers to that parish. I looked at the 1831 census for Co. Londonderry/Derry. There were 71 Kelly households in that parish.  That particular census only recorded the name of the head of household, not the children or other occupants, so without the brother’s father’s name I can’t suggest where in the county they may have lived.

The RC parish baptism records cover 1836, and then 1846 onwards. So they were both born before the start of records. So you won’t find them that way.  You really need a marriage or death certificate with parents names but I know you have already looked for that without success.

I didn’t see anyone in the 1901 Irish census of the right age to be Daniel or Thomas.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee. The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project and can offer FTDNA testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).

  • Propably on the wrong page, I have had my mothers and my DNA done but am still learning how to process the results from that.  Is the a site specific to tracing themale line irrespective of the names used along the way.  May have to convince a cousin to do his as he has a clear male line back to the elusive Mr Daniel Kelly.
