Hello & Happy New Year,

I am looking for inforation on my ancestors Micheal Reid (Born 1830) and Bridget Lynch Reid (born 1832 or 1833 I believe).
They married in Borrioskane in the diocesse of Kllaloe in 1855.

They had two sons born in Borrioskane, William (born 1857) and Thomas (born in 1858).

The emigrated to NYC in 1859.

I am wondering if anyone has any other information on their parents/siblings or anything else?

I would be so grateful.

Have a wonderful day.

  • Hi Jennifer,

The marriage record on www.rootsireland.ie/ does not have the parents' names I'm afraid. However, it does give the religion as R C

The National Library of Oreland has the R C registers available to search on-line at registers.nli.ie/; Borrisokane baptisms start at 1821. Marriages usually took place in the bride's parish so you may only find Bridget but it's worth a try - tough going though as it's hard to read

No Reids or Lynches in Tipp in the 1851 Irish Census I'm afraid

  • MHi, In the Tithe records 1823 - 1837 there is a Richard Reid in Ardcrony.
    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…
Richard is at the top of the page, it says he was "In Fee" meaning he owned the land. (next to Richard Falkner) (The Falkners lived at Mount Falcon (House))
Ardcrony is about 5 miles from Borrisokane.

So next we see Griffiths Valuation (1837 to 1864)
    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
There are a few Reids, this in the 1850's Quite a lot of records.
The Civil Records were introduced in 1864 so now to
    https://www.irishgenealogy.ie
this site is free and it's a case of looking through the registration districts.
The ones you need are Borrisokane, Roscrea and Nenagh
Example .......this is Richard the son of Richard and the grandson of the Richard in the Tithe records, for his marriage to Alice Davis in 1932. they were in Roscrea.
BUT, you will see that it is quite near to County Offaly, this was known as Kings County in some records. Some records ovelap counties.
In the Census in 1901 there are Reids, in Borrsokane and Cloughjordan.

I hope this is a help. You really need to work backwards. If you get stuck I will try to help, ok.

  • Thank you so much for all of your help.

I have hit a wall and not sure where to search next. I did find  some members of the family Thomas Lynch (They named their second son Thomas so I am going by the clue and hoping they named him after her father. Also there is a Michael Reed in Loughkeen in 1828. Is it generally easier to come search the birth records? I am not able to read a whole lot.

I am really guessing now. We do not have any Richards in our family line that I know of and wonder if the names would be similar to thoseThomas, Michael, William or John?.

Also I am just wondering if Richard was a land owner, would Michael have been illiterate?

The other quesiton I had is where in the area would one have gone at the time to  learn to be a cooper (Barrel maker). As Michael Reid was a cooper and Bridget Lynch was a teacher, educated and I believe wrote and read both English and Gaelic.

They both said they were from Borrisokane but now I am wondering if it was even Tipperary.

Thank you again for all of your help! I am so so grateful.

  • Hi Jennifer,
    You ask...............................
The other quesiton I had is where in the area would one have gone at the time to  learn to be a cooper (Barrel maker). As Michael Reid was a cooper and Bridget Lynch was a teacher, educated and I believe wrote and read both English and Gaelic.

In the town of Cloughjordan there was a Whiskey Distillery owned by Edward Kennedy, google it, it was also a Mill, they would have used barrels that had had wine stored, not sure at that time if they made wine anywhere! I should imagine that they made beer, stout etc.

I have a couple of books about Cloughjordan so I will have a look for any information.
Loughkeen is not that far from Cloughjordan or Borrisokane have a look at.... type in on search.............
    loughkeen tipperary map
you will see LARGER MAP click on it and - 4 times to zoom out and you will see the area.

  • Hello Margot,
I could not find anything in my search but a retelling of the distillery that said it opened in 1869 (after my family left Ireland). However if it was a mill first maybe that was open previously? Let me know if you do find anything! I so appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share :) .

    Have a great day!

  • Hi Jenn, No it was open before 1869. A project was uploaded some time ago,...... see this link.

Some where along my line these Kennedy's are related to mine. I have Martin Kennedy, his son Patrick b 1833 and Edward b 1841 (my line)
I have been trying to get info to see if Edward the Mill/Distillery owner and my Martin a Blacksmith were brothers or cousins.
They originated south of Nenagh in a place called Silvermines, which has many townlands, mainly Kilmore.
1700's records are harder to find.  I know that the place where I lived for my first 6 months was in the Kennedy family (Blacksmiths) from 1790ish.
I did obtain a Land Registry Cert. but it was only from the 1960's. I do have the original Key from the very old Oak door.
I have looked in my book, 1655-59 William Prittie inherited the Title "Lord Dunalley"  with a MILL, Distillery 2 Churches, 38 houses.
It was 1824 when Edward Kennedy established a thriving distillery.
I will see if I can find anyhting about the Reid family.
