Dear Intrepid Ireland Reaching Out Volunteers, I would very much appreciate help finding more information regarding history of the  Baylee family connected with Lough Gur, Limerick.

The bones of the information I have is as follows : Henry Baylee was born in 1708 in Lough Gur. His father (?) was born est 1659, d 1719. Henry's daughter Jane  b est 1724-1730 d 1756 Limerick City. She married John Odell in 1751.

In an article "A History of Castelgarde Part 4" it says:

Henry Bailey (Bally, Baylee or Baillee in some documents) was the main tenant in charge and Bouchier agent over both Castlegarde and Lough Gur castles in 1659. We are not sure if this Henry Bailey is one and the same or a son of Henry Bailey who defended Lough Gur castle as Warder against the Irish confederacy during the seige of 1641 when he was also responsible for holding Castlegarde for Royalist forces.

Any other information or where to find resources on this family would be most appreciated.

Many thanks, LINZ.

  • Hi You can take it that he is one and the same Henry Balyee--while I have heard of the Baylee Family I almost know nothing about them but I will make enquiries as there is a family living in Lough Gur called Weeks and that family are in the same place since at least 1640. Lough Gur Castle was originally owned by the Earl of Desmond but he was defeated in 1584 and the castle given to the Bouchier Family. George Quain (georgequain@hotmail.com)

  • Dear Ireland Reaching Out Notice Board Baylee Friend,

(sorry, I cannot see a name)

Thank-you for your recent notice board response.

It is always a thrill to read a message on the board!

It is quite wonderful to have this asset available for those of us who live so far away.

What a sense of history you must hold as the last Baylee of this line!

I now see you wrote a message back in 2022, which I have just read for the first time.

In 2022 I visited Ireland, and went to Lough Gur to try and get a sense of the place and the historic context of the Baylee family formerly living

    there.

My son did not really see a strong reason for visiting, however, I had a strong intuition about the place, and was determined to explore and

    research what I could.

I thank you very much for reaching out.

I would very much like to see any relevant family history connected with Jane Baylee, who was apparently a daughter of Henry Baylee whom

you say is your 5-6th great grandfather.

Also, do you have any portraits of those particular ancestors, or close family, or any illustrations of their former house?

Maybe we can think about continuing this family history chat in the future through a private contact?

I am so grateful for your message on the message board and look forward keenly to your reply,

    Yours sincerely,

    Linz.
