I am a descendant of Irish Immigrants and  have been researching my family for decades. I am currently planning a trip to Ireland with some of my cousins - we are calling it our "Ancestor Tour".

We are in possession of several records that indicate our third great grandfather and grandmother were born and baptized in your parish, and were also married there and their daughter was born and baptized there.

20 March, 1800, baptism of Thomas, son of Thomas Fox and Bridget Lenard (possibly Leonard)

12 December 1824, Marriage of Thomas Fox & Anne Finnan (possibly Finan)

16 January 1825, Baptism of Margaret Fox, daughter of Thomas Fox and Ann Finnan

We want very much to visit your area while we are in Ireland and I wonder if you could clarify what church (if it is still standing) would it be? I am also attaching a piece of the documents that we have - you may notice that the record of Thomas Fox' baptism has a name on top that Seems to read St. Herburgh's...   Does that make any sense to you?

We also want to visit any cemeteries that may contain information and/or headstones for the burial of Thomas Fox's parents, Thomas and Bridget Lenard.

We would be very grateful for any additional information you can provide, and we are looking forward to our visit in September!

  • Good evening,

Margaret Fox was born in Ardagh  and Moydow parish, County Longford to Thomas Fox and Ann Finnan. The surnames mentioned in your post are all to be found in the same parish today. There are graveyards in both Ardagh and  Moydow. The reference to St.Werburghs on the document you attached does not refer to County Longford but may refer to St. Werburghs church in Dublin, perhaps this reference relates to another branch of your  family?   Do you have dates when your ancestor emigrated?

    Kind regards

  • Thank you so much for your reply.

I am happy to know that we will be able to visit the parish there! Do you know if the churches are the old ones, or had they been rebuilt? Is there a way to know which church we might be looking for? You mention that there are families with the same names in that parish, I wonder how we could go about finding if any of those families might know of their family line, and, therefore, could be cousins. Any suggestions? I've written to the parish twice (via email) but so far have had no reply.

As for the name of the Dublin church that shows in the record, if you look closely, you will see that it looks like it is another piece of paper underneath that record, but the question is that it looks almost like it was deliberately placed there for some reason. The record is definately from the parish of Ardagh  and Moydow, and the information was in the family bible, so I can't explain why the note with the name of the Dublin church is there. We have never had any reason to believe they (or any other family member) came from the Dublin area. Perhaps it was just laying under the book when it was photographed?

We are reasonably certain that the family left when Margaret was less than two years old. Considering that Margaret was born less than two months after the marriage, we wondered if they left due to social pressure?

Again, I thank you for taking the time to answer me. It is very much appreciated.

  • Hello again

I feel as though I may be a pest but I am frustrated with the lack of response from the parish office, I've written to them twice. We are planning to visit there on Sunday, Sept. 23. Perhaps we may attend a church service there as well. (which church should we attend?)  I would very much like to make a connection with the parish  before we arrive and have some knowledge of where we might look in an old cemetery if there is one there, and/or possibly meet any parishoners with the same surnames. I don't know how to contact the parish office directly except the one email address that is posted on the website.  We only have one day there and I want to make the best of the time that we have. Any suggestions?

  • Hi Carol I have brought your query to the attention of staff in Longford County Library who will hopefully be able to link you up with a local historian in the area who might be able to help.

    Kind regards

  • Carol I have been in contact with the Archivist at Longford  library who is from the general area of Ardagh and Moydow.  If you send an email to the archivist, Martin Morris, at archivist@ongfordcoco.ie he should be able to help.

Hope you enjoy the visit and get to meet up with relatives.

  • Eilish,

I want to thank you for all your help with my desire to connect with cousins before our trip to Ireland. Just as a follow up I have been in touch with an entire family, who we both think might just be our cousins. We have a little more research to do to confirm for absolute certain, but we will work on that... I am leaving this morning for Ireland and we plan to meet with them Monday. You were the one who followed up and helped to get the ball rolling with this and I can't thank you enough!
