Hi

I am hoping to find a kind person who could hunt up a gravestone for me, if there is one (she had financial difficulties after her husband died).

Alicia Kirby (maiden name unknown), died 1842. Born about 1780? Previously married to a man with the surname Vipont. Alicia died in Keely townland. Her husband, Edward Kirby, a solicitor in Dublin, had died in the 1820s I think. Am not certain  why she moved to Keely. Perhaps this was where she came from originally. I believe she was COI.  Her son Edward was COI minister at Drummaul, near Randallstown from about 1840 until his death in 1859. A very kind woman from Randallstown emailed me images of his gravestone and I am hoping someone could do similar if a gravestone of Alicia could be found near Keely, maybe at St Guaire's?

Best wishes

  • Jenni,

The Aghadowey Church of Ireland gravestones and burial records are on the Causeway Coast & Glens NIFHS website. I checked and there are no Kirby burials or gravestones listed. I also checked Aghadowey Presbyterian gravestones but no mention of her there either.

I am not sure what other graveyards there are. Perhaps others who know the area better may be able to help.

Occupants of Keely in the 1831 census:

  • I know this thread is a few year old but I suspect that Alicia's maiden name MIGHT have been Orr. Alicia was not a common Christian name but it does crop up several times in the Orr family.

If you look at the households in the 1831 Census the first one is James Orr of Keely House. He married Elizabeth Alexander of Limavady and had family: Alexander, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anne Helen, Alicia, Rebecca. Dr. T. H. Mullin in Aghadowey A Parish and its Linen Industry (1972) says Alicia Orr "married John Britton without paternal consent."

Could this 'John Britton' be John Vipond? It would certainly explain why Alicia died at Keely.

There is a headstone for James Orr, wife Elizabeth and some children in St. Guaire's Church of Ireland, Aghadowey but daughter Alicia is not listed on it.

  • "Correction- "There is a headstone for James Orr, wife Elizabeth and some children in St. Guaire's Church of Ireland, Aghadowey but daughter Alicia is not listed on it."

This headstone is for James Orr's nephew James Orr, wife Elizabeth Spotswood & their family.
