Family information wanted about Alexander Hamilton .
Born: 1854 County Monaghan, Ireland.
I don't know exactly when or how, he ended up in New Zealand and, in 1888 married Elizabeth Harriet Strickett- known as Lizzie.
She was born in 1863, Islington London, Middlesex England, to George James Strickett 1834-1913 and Harriet Strickett nee Aldred.
Lizzie was one of 13 children, other members of her family came to New Zealand as well. Her Father died here in 1913, one of her brother's Ebenezer Strickett died here in 1958.
Anyway, Alexander and Lizzie had a daughter in New Zealand, Gertrude Hamilton who was born and died in 1889 Auckland New Zealand.
They had another daughter Edith Grace Hamilton in 1891, one document lists her as born in New Zealand, the 1901 Census in Ireland say she was born in the USA. I can find nothing to support the USA claim, but nothing to deny it either.
Somehow Alexander, Lizzie and Edith Grace returned to County Monaghan Ireland, the story I was told by an elderly family member was that either Alexander's father or an uncle had died leaving a farm untended, so they returned to take it over.
While there, they had three more children:
Hilda Margaret Hamilton 1894-1954
Ruth Hamilton 1893- unknown
Nelson Alexander Hamilton 1897-1918
Unfortunately in 1905 aged 42 years old Lizzie Hamilton nee Strickett died, in Ireland.
In February 1906 Alexander Hamilton and the children sailed from Liverpool to Auckland New Zealand aboard the SS Ayrshire where they settled.
Alexander Hamilton died in either 1943 or 1945 in Greenlane Hospital, Greenlane Auckland New Zealand. As far as I know he never remarried.
I would love to know about any relations such as parents, siblings or, grandparents.
thank you

Hi,
In 1901 there was Scott Hamilton also living in Lisagore, Broomfield, Monaghan. The same townland Alexander was living. Scott might have been an uncle or brother of Alexander??
Scott was 67 in 1901 and married to Sarah. His father was Samuel.

He died in 1905.

You might want to check death records on Irishgenealogy (free) Civil Records for Hamilton in Monaghan. One might be Alexander's uncle??

Belinda,
In the 1901 census, Emily Sherlock (niece) was living with Alexander and family. Emily's parents were Matthew Sherlock and Elizabeth Hamilton (I assume Alexander's sister). Emily's birth record below.

Her parents were married in Down in 1879. Elizabeth's father was William Hamilton.

Down By the way, I think Edith Grace place of birth might have been mis transcribed on the 1901 census. The original looks like first two letter are Au.

Belinda.
The trees on Ancestry show Mary Ann Kelly as William's wife.

This might be Alexander's father?? My only concern it shows he is a widower and the trees on Ancestry show Mary dying in 1904. The trees might be wrong.
According to the trees on Ancestry Scott Hamilton who I mentioned above was the son of Samuel Hamilton, the brother of William.
A William Hamilton was in both the Tithe Apploment Book and Griffith Valuation.

Hi again,
Thankyou all so much for your time and help.
I haven't joined Ancestry at this stage, as I am on a very limited income currently. I hope to do so eventually though, fortunately I have been able to find plenty about the English and Scottish parts of my family without it so far. Just Alexander Hamilton and his background had me stumped, so thank you very much again, I so appreciate your help.
Have a great day, Belinda

Belinda,
I have gathered some info from trees on Ancestry. It might not be 100% accurate. You can confirm some info on Irishgenealogy (free website).
Alexander had three sisters.
Mary Jane (1848-1891) married Samuel White in 1869, They lived in Casleblayney District.
Elizabeth (1852-), I mentioned above, married Matthew Sherlock in 1879. They had 6 children. He died in 1887. Some trees show Elizabeth heading to Canada and then to Australia.
Margaret Ann (1860-1951) married in New Zealand, Walter Benjamin Plaisted. She died in Victoria.
Alexander's father, William, had 8 siblings. William's father was William Hamilton (1770-1844), Justice of Peace, and based on DNA results Ann (Agnes) Woods is suggested as his mother.

Hi Mary,
thank you very much for the information.
Regarding the 1901 Ireland Census original document and Edith Grace's birthplace.
I agree with you that the first two letters appear to be Au or even Aw, however the last letters are definitely erica. I enlarged that entry 500% and that particular entry looks very smudged (compared to the others), and as if either Australia or New Zealand was written in first and then been mostly erased and written over. I have also noticed on other original documents that the letter M often looks like a U or a W, but is definitely an M for the word to make sense. I guess its just that style of writing and individual style.
Thanks again Belinda

Hi Mary,
Yes I have seen that one.
I don't think so, good idea though.
I guess it really doesn't matter if it's Auckland New Zealand or America or Ireland.
We know that she was born and lived.
Thank you so much, Belinda
