Article III of The Statute of Kilkenny 1367 made it illegal for English colonists in Ireland to speak the Irish language and for the native Irish to speak their language when interacting with them.
The Statute of Kilkenny made it against the law for the English noblemen in Ireland to:
- Use an Irish name
- Marry an Irish person
- Adopt an Irish child
- Wear Irish clothes
- Speak the Irish language
- Play Irish music
- Listen to Irish story-tellers
- Play Irish games
- Let an Irish person join an English religious house
- Appoint any Irish clergyman to any church in the English settlement
- Ride a horse in the Irish style, (i.e. without a saddle).
However, these laws did not hav the Anglo-Irish ignored them.
