Killala Round Tower stands almost twenty-six metres high. It has a door that is accessed by ladder three metres above the ground. The plinth is one metre high. It is said that the souterrain in the grounds of the church across the road leads into it.
It was built on the site of the original fifth-century monastic settlement sometime between 1170 and 1238. It is a replica of the older tower at Turlough outside Castlebar which is older. The tower is composed of many large stones of limestone. The doorway, which has a three-stone arch, is composed of a light brown sandstone. It is reported that the tower was struck by lightning and was damaged.
Local history tells us that St. Patrick was rumored to have spent part of his captivity near here. It is also said that he appointed St. Muiredach as the first Bishop.
