This Martello Tower lies at the southern end of Garnish Island. The building has been restored by the Office of Public Works and it is now possible to climb to the top where there are fantastic views of the surrounding area.
The tower itself is a pure cylinder in shape from top to bottom and does not spread out at the base like other towers or castle fortifications might. These type of tower, or coastal forts were popular as defensive structures in the 19th century. The island itself measures about 35 acres and is only reachable by boat from Glengariff.
