                        EDWARD T. HAYES

Brother of Misses Julia and Annie Hayes Died in Pawtucket, R. I.

Edward T. Hayes died May 4 at the Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, R.I., where he had submitted to an operation from which he had appeared to recovering until complications set in from which he was unable to rally.

His sister, Miss Julia Hayes was with him during his illness, bringing the body to Waterbury where the funeral was held from St. Andrew’s Church Saturday morning at 8:30, the funeral Mass being sung by Rev. Lawrence R. Cain.  The bearers were Julian Ryan, Harry Harvey, Dan Manning, Charles Grace, John Keefe, and Asa Picard.  Interment was in the family lot in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

There were relatives and friends present from Rhode Island, Massachussetts and New Hampshire as well as from other Vermont towns.

Surviving members of the family are four sisters, Mrs. Ellen Ryan of Montpelier, Mrs. Mary Burke of Franklin, N.H., Miss Annie and Miss Julia Hayes of Waterbury; a stepson and a granddaughter, Miss Elsie Siple of Cranston, R.I., also a number of nieces and nephews.

Edward T. Hayes was born on Crossett Hill in Duxbury February 14, 1865.  He went to Providence, R. I., in his young manhood where for many years he was associated with the Gorham Silver Co., as a traveling salesman, later developing his own business.  For the past twenty years he was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of East Providence where he owned a home.

He married Mrs. Sylvia Siple who died in April 1927.  Since her death he had spent many of the summer months with his sisters in Waterbury.  He was a member of the Crossett Hill Association, attending the reunions each summer and was always loyal to the neighborhood where he spent his boyhood days.

With his passing, the last son of a large family, it seems fitting to recall to memory something of that family, whose lives became closely linked with many in Duxbury, the town which they chose for their home.

The parents, William and Julia (Hefferman) Hayes were married in Limerick, Ireland, January 21, 1841.  Two sons, James and Michael, born in that country, died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Hayes came to this country in 1846, landing in Quebec, coming by boat to Burlington and walking from there to Waterbury.

Mr. Hayes was employed on the Central Vermont Railroad when it was being built, living in Waterbury and other towns for short periods to be near his work.

In 1854 he purchased the farm on Crossett Hill in Duxbury which was to be the home of the family for many years

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hayes in this country.  They were Patrick, Ellen, Mary, John, William, James, Annie, Joseph Michael, Edward, and Julia, the last eight of whom were born in Duxbury and all attending Crossett Hill School, Miss Julia later become a teacher of that school.  She was also a teacher in the Waterbury Graded school and has recently retired.

Of a sturdy, dependable stock, the family played a prominent part in the community life.  It can truly be said that, of such people, a substantial, wholesome community life is made.

In later years all of the sons but Edward went to Colorado, some being engaged in mining, smelting, and cattle ranching and others in mercantile business.

In 1902 a party was given when a large number of friends gathered at the Hayes home in honor of the 61st wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, among those promoting the affair being Judge Eber W. Huntley and Mr. and Mrs. James E. Crossett.

Mr. Hayes died June 16, 1903, the family leaving the farm in 1905 and purchasing the home in Waterbury where Annie and Julia still ive.  There Mrs. Hayes died January 11, 1912 at the age of 89 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Hayes purchased the farm remaining there a number of years until his health began to fail when he purchased the Same Baird place at Duxbury Corner where he lived until his death.

Since that time the farm has been abandoned as a home as have many other back farms on Crossett Hill where once lived respected citizens of a happy and thriving community.  In the hearts of those left there remains a sadness as they remember those days and friends of yore.
