Immigrated to Detroit, MI in 1839 or 1840 at age 18. Joined an older brother there, David Gray. He subsequently became a well respected attorney. Sir John Gray is also a brother in the family of 11 siblings. His parents had move to Co Mayo from Ulster to accept a position working on an estate.
William married a Mary Wilson. They had 3 sons. The oldest, Charles Wilson, moved to Montana in 1878 and started a ranch. The other 2 brothers remained in Detroit and were attorneys also.
