Migrated to/Born in UK

William Barr Weir was born on 10 January 1870 in Galgorm, Antrim, his father, William son of King Weir  was 28 and his mother, Sarah nee Barr was 26.  I believe he was one of their many children it seems they migrated twice to Scotland based on some childrens births happening in scotland and others ireland this seems to tally with censuses of that time also

King Weir his father was married to a Esther/Agnes/ Nancy Steele ? and they lived in 38 Ballyclosh, Galgorm Antrim according to the census neither could read or write and her name changed repeatedly each census so I'm unsure what it was although family photos surfaced that confirm it was Esther.

William Barr Weir married twice 1st wife was Mary Algie in 1895 in Paisley Scotland.
2nd wife was my great grandmother x2  Catherine Ward Weir they married on 2 November 1915 Clydebank, Dumbartonshire ,Scotland  they had a daughter Elizabeth Ward Weir on 1917 (my great gran ) .He died on 12 February 1953 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, at the age of 83.

any info on the Weir's/Barr's/Steele's would be gratefully received .

  • Hi. My name is George Weir.  I dont think weve made contact before?  William was my Great Grandfather. I knew he had another daughter. I also knew Catherine Ward/McGregor already had a daughter (Charlotte) from a previous marriage.

He was born in Ballyclose near Cullybackey in 1870 as William Weir.  The Barr middle name only appeared on his death certificate, added by his stepdaughter for some reason?  He moved with his family to Renfrew from Ireland in about 1881/1882. He married Mary Algie (my great grandmother) in 1895 in Paisley and they went on to have 7 children. Mary died in the Paisley Poorhouse in 1914, having been abandoned by William and that is a sad story in itself. William died in 1953 in Coatbridge and the witness was his stepdaughter Charlotte. I have some photos of his grandmother and his 3 youngest sisters. My dad met him in the 1940's and described him as a small man with a white beard and a bowler hat.  You mentioned you have some family photos in your post and it would be great to see them.

    Cheers George
