Migrated to/Born in Australia

Born 7 Feb 1809 Timothy Herlihy was married to Margaret (nee Coleman) when he was tried at Cork City 2 August 1842 for throwing vitriol on Mr Wilson, a saw mill owner in Cork City. Mr Wilson lost his eyesight in one eye. Timothy'was transported beyond the seas for term of his natural life. He arrived in Van Diemen's Land 10 January 1943.

After trying three times to have his family emigrate the applications were finally accepted. His wife Margeret and four sons, Patrick (18), John (16), Thomas (14), and Barry (12) arrived in VDL 18 July 1853.

There is a substantial chapter in Port Cygnet Irish Convicts (2012) by David Coad detailing the trial and subsequent transportation of Timothy.

  • Do you know who Timothy's parents were? My Daniel Herlihy was born in 1821 to Denis Herlihy and Catherine Connor. Maybe they were siblings?
