Stayed in Ireland
Thomas Sullivan joined the Irish Constabulary on 1 January 1840 at the age of 21, and was posted away, settling in County Down where he eventually rose to the rank of Head Constable.. The required sponsorship for his application was given by Walter Laurence, which is the chief reason for supposing that Clonfert in Galway was his home parish. He appears to have spelled his name Sulivan. His son, Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan, returned to Galway in October 1871 to matriculate at the University, and left in 1875 with the degrees of MD and master of surgery.
