Thomas Sammon, a trained tailor from Galway, Ireland, landed in New York and settled in Philadelphia, PA in 1836. Thomas remained there for five years and then moved on to Cincinnati, and from there to St. Louis working at his trade in both cities for about one year. He then went to Galena, Illinois where he stayed for twelve years.
In 1849, Thomas Sammon married Julia McKenna who was a native of New Jersey. They had seven children: John, William, Thomas Jr., Timothy, Edwin, Margaret, and Julian.
After that he went to the vicinity of Durand, Illinois where he farmed with his brother Timothey until 1875. In 1875, Thomas moved his family to Gutherie County, Iowa and settled on Section 2 in Highland Township near the little town of Bayard. The Sammon farm numbered 160 acres of good land, mostly under cultivation.
He died in Bayard in 1887 and was buried at Willow Cemetery.
While there is a Corbally, Galway located NE of Galway City, there is no trace of any Sammon family members there. It is believed that he may have been born in Garbally on what was the estate of the Earl of Clancarty, now Garbally College in Ballinasloe. Another possibility in Corbally More or Corbally Hogan near Mullagh and Abbeygormican.
