Thomas Philbin:
do you know the names of his parents? I have Thomas Philbin son of Francis Philbin & Mary Mulrooney, but he was born/baptised 23-5-1841.
He had brothers: Patrick, John & Martin. Does any of this ring a bell with you? Thanks. Joy.

Dear Joy, I've never been able to find anything about Thomas Philbin's family in Ballina, so your post at least gives me some leads to follow. I even paid the North Mayo Genealogical Research team to look into it & they found nothing. We thought Thomas was perhaps a famine orphan.
Many thanks!!
Hi Marci,
years ago I also paid North Mayo Society to try to find my Philbin (Filbin) ancestors. Like you, they came back to me with nothing. I also tried and paid "Timeline Genealogy in Ireland" and again came up with nothing I already knew - in fact I gave them info they didnt know about!!!
Forgot to say previously that Francis Philbin was born c 1811 in Kilmoremoy. He was convicted of stealig 3 heifers in 1836 and transported first to Bermuda and then eventually to Tasmania where he remarried.
I know that Francis & Mary Philbin were resident in Attychree and their childen were baptised in Carragaree Church. This info is taken from Fr Sweeney's book " In The Footsteps of Saint Brendan, a History of Castleconnor".
From Francis's arrival in Tasmania the spelling of his name became Filbin. I live in Australia and Francis is my gr gr grandfather.
Where are you? Would like to stay in contact if possible. All the best. Joy.
Hello Joy, I live in Florida. All of my Philbin ancestors emigrated from Mayo to Pennsylvania to work in the coal mines. They never seemed to speak about their family in Ireland, or if they did it was never recorded. Thomas may have mentioned brothers who "went west" (from the entry point of Canada to Chicago) but my research has never found anything.
Hi Marci,
I might now try to find anything in America. Know you have already done so and found nothing, but I shall give it a go anyway.
You mention "brothers who went west". Do you know their names? Is there any connection to Regis Philbin who died not so long ago?
I have been tracing the Philbins(Filbins) for over 20 years now, and keep coming up against brick walls.
Tll next time. Joy.
Hello Joy,
I have a good handle on Thomas Philbin once he got to America. One of his sons, Patrick A. Philbin, became a state senator in Pennsylvania and another, Matthew, became a successful banker. They did well for themselves, considering that their dad arrived here with presumably nothing.
It's the family info in Ballina, Ireland that I've gotten absolutely nowhere with. I would love to visit there someday hopefully soon, when the Covid is gone or under control.
I don't have any info - and am not at all sure it's true - that Thomas had brothers who "went west" to Chicago. The relative who told me was not at all confident which side of the family she was talking about!
Regis Philbin's grandfather was from Castlebar I believe? I found an article on Irish Central:
Philbin has traveled to Ireland, and brought his morning show over there in the 1980s to film at the Philbin family homestead in Co. Mayo.
“We took a crew over to seek out my great-great grandfather’s home,” Philbin recalled. “We went over there and we got to the priest in the town and he directed us right to the location. It was just a foundation of where the house was. So I said, let’s have a party for whatever Philbins were left here in town. Well, it got around and the whole town came running! It was a memorable trip for us.”
Maybe it's on YouTube! That would be so cool to see.
Here is the Regis Philbin TV program where he visited Mayo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUwFQZRPvh4&t=1502s
My Philbins also emigrated to Scranton, PA in mid 1880s.
James Philbin & Ann Murray.
I also cant find info on any parent or sibling info dating back to Ireland.
They most solid evidence I have found is their first 3 children's birth records in Selkirk Scotland (1867-1871) indicates James & Ann were married in Nov 1866 in Ballina, Ireland.
Then they moved to South Shields, Durham England (1873- 1882), Had a few more children,
then moved to Scranton, PA in 1883-1884.
Hi Brian,
thanks for all that. Gives me something to follow up on. These Philbins are certainly a headache at times!!!.
Joy.
