Back to List

Originally from East Galway, Thomas was recommended for the Royal Irish Constabulary by Lord Ffrench in 1847. He served in Limerick, where he met and married Frances Keenan. He was fined - not sure why - in 1852. There may have been children born in Limerick. He moved to Ballinhassig, County Cork, where the couple's recorded children were born (we have a family bible with most of their dates). In 1872 he was living in Goggins Hill, Ballinhassig, Cork. He was fined again in 1870 for 'delaying unnecessarily when on duty & drinking with civilians (previous conduct very irregular)'. In 1871 - a month after his daughter's wedding - he was reduced to the rank of sub-constable. He was dismissed in 1874 for 'acting vindictively towards his Constable & drinking with civilians'. Molly (Roberts) always said that his son in law was dismissed / left the country because of 'sheltering Fenians'. 'Drinking with civilians' may be a euphemism for that! Thomas moved to Scotland with his wife and family, and the Jones family in 1874 or 1875. His youngest son Patrick was born and died there - as did many of his other children and his wife. In 1881, Thomas is a Life Assurance Agent, living with his wife (known as Fanny), their children Thomas, Frances and Elizabeth and 2 lodgers at 23 Summerfield Cottages. In 1991, Found Thomas living with his son, Thomas in Partick. Still a 'life insurance agent'; this is the occupation given on Thmas Jnr's marriage record. Fanny had died by then. Thomas died of bronchitis in 1895. Age given as 62 - little white lie! More like 67
