  • Thomas Dunning had a home/store in town on Main St., and opened a mercantile and pharmacy there in 1828. He also opened a school in 1828 in a near-by townland. He married Anne Hayes in 1827, and their first child,Catherine, was born in 1828. Another girl, Margaret, was born in 1830, Patrick in 1832, Ann in 1834, Mary in 1836( became a nun), and my great grandfather, John Dunning in 1838, Thomas in 1840, a son, in 1842, and finally, James in 1844. Anne died in 1860, and Thomas in 1876. Their son Thomas, stayed in Killenaule, while John joined the British Navy, jumped ship and got to the US just in time for the Civil War. James and another brother also stayed in Killenaule, and both died young. Thomas took over the pharmacy and was a chemist.  His first wife was Margaret Mary Quirk, who died in 1880. He then married Amy Ryan who died in 1990. there were four children of those two marriages, Ann, who died in 1919, Patrick, who took over the pharmacy in 1911 when his father, Thomas died, and Kevin.  He, too was a chemist. There were two more sons of Thomas, I believe who were pharmacists. Thomas married a third time in 1892, but there were no children of this union. Son Patrick married Bride Kennedy and there were four sons, thomas, a priest and PhD. in Old English at University Dublin, his younger brother, Patrick who was also a priest and a president of Armagh University. One son died at birth, and Gerlad became a pharmacist and worked in the store with his mother until 1945. His father died young in 1923.
