Mother - Isabella Armstrong, died either at sea or at Grosse Ile, Quebec, 1847; married 25 Apr 1821, Devenish, Church of Ireland

The father (with family) is shown as a tenant to Mr. Deering in Drumscollop townland, in the 1841 census. Upon emigrating in 1847, they departed Derry on the ship Sesostris and went to Quebec, though the mother died along the way. It is possible that the family was headed to Mooers, New York, which is near the border, south of Montreal. There were other families there named Emerson and Armstrong, including an Emerson family from Devenish parish. The father (John) and three youngest sons appear in Mooers in the 1850 census. Robert (eldest son) appears to have gone to Toronto on his own and, in 1854, married there Ann Simpson (1832-1923), native of County Tyrone. They had six children, born in Ontario, Michigan, and Wisconsin,. Robert's father and siblings (and a related family from Mooers) settled near Waupaca, Wisconsin, in 1858. Robert and his young family followed by about 1862, settling in Waupaca town. Robert was a shoemaker by trade and served briefly in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He died in 1899, age 77.
