Patrick McHale was born in the civl parish of Killala, County Mayo in 1826.
As a young man, Patrick enlisted in the British military forces.
When he was 31 years old, Patrick was involved in action at the Siege of Lucknow. During the siege, Patrick's bravery was noted in the capture of not one but two enemy guns. It was remarked that he never hesitated in being the first to rush forwards in the attack, putting himself in considerable danger. For his selfless bravery on that day, he was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross.
Patrick left India for England where he was stationed in Kent when he died on the 26th of October 1866.
