In the 1749 Census of Elphin Diocese, a Pat and Giles Barrett were residing together as tenants of Mahon-Sandford in the 66 acre townland of "Tonereeva Comen" aka Tonycurneen.
By the time of Griffith's Valuation, the Lannon, Carley and Murphy families resided there. The Carley (Carlis) name was prolific in the area before the Great Famine. By 1858, only Bernard Carley of Tonycurneen was recorded with land in this parish.
