Laurence Mannion was born 29 September 1829 in Whitepark townland, Clonbern Parish, County  Galway, Ireland. He died on 1 July 1873 in Haverstraw, New York, USA.

The only homeland information we originally had was from an address in an old journal for a Darby, or Darley or Farley (may actually be Dermot Mannion. He said he wrote him a letter in 1851. it was addressed to a White Kars, Glannamiada Post Office, County Galway, IR

White Kars seems to be White Park, which seems to be Parkbaun. Glannamiada seems to be Glennamaddy.

I have recently seen Laurence Mannion's intent to become a citizen paper. He applied to begin the U.S. Citizen process in 1849. He states that he is 19 years of age. He entered the USA at New York City on 29 April 1847. This date and his date of birth was provided by Laurence on March 15, 1849 at Essex County Police Court in Lawrence Massachsetts.

Laurence lived in New York City in January 1850 where he married for the first time. His wife Rose Ann McCarthy (1832-1860) gave birth to 4 children: unknown name (1851-?), Jeremiah 'Derby' (1853-?), Mary (1855-?) and Martin (1858-?). Rose Ann died of a leg infection in Haverstraw in May 1860.

Laurence remarried in September 1860 to Ann Gibson (1833-?). His wife Ann gave birth to 5 children: Thomas (1861-1942), Rosanna (1862-1868), Catherine (1864-1933), Bridget (1869-1934) and Lawrence (1872-1906).

Bridget Emily Mannion married Thomas Henry Welsh. They are my parternal grandparents.

Parish Community members of Iremland Reaching Out, Liam Irwin and Roger McDonnell have been very helpful with my research. They provided the following information,

The Tithe Applotment Books of 1823-1837 have a record for Darby Mannion, White Park, Clonbern. Clonbern is in North East Galway. The actual date for Darby Mannion is 1830. Darby is a commonly used form of Dermot. OSI Mapviewer shows a townland called Parkburn. BAUN is an Anglicization of BAN (pronounced BAWN)-the Irish (gaelic) for White. To see 1 select OSI Mapviewer, type Glennamaddy and see Parkburn just west of that town.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation of Irenland-C;onbern, County Galway also shows Mannion family members in Parkbaun. The are Eleanor, Jeremiah, Lawrence, Patrick and Thomas.(1 Aug 2017)

Comments

  • I have a distant DNA connection to the author of this narrative as well as to other Mannions with connections to the White Park area.

I found an 1876 death record for a 94 year old Jeremiah Mannion from White Park.  His death was reported by his son, Martin.  Jeremiah is another name that I believe is sometimes used as alternative for Darby although I have no idea why.

My GGGrandfather was named Darby Mannion.  His oldest son, my GGrandfather, was Lawrence Mannion / Manning.
